Will a tourist visa be enough?

I am a canadian currently working for an american drilling company in different countries around the world. I would like to spend some time in the US for the next year or two. I was wondering if I am able to spend 4 or maximum 5 months (non-consecutively, maximum 3 weeks at a time) in the US with just a tourist visa. I do not plan on working in the US, just would like to visit and enjoy some of the bigger cities, perhaps even invest in some real-estate. Is this feasible? Also wondering if it's possible to get a driver's licence in the US or would I be able to drive in the US with a driver's licence from another country?

Thank you all for your help with this, look forward to discovering the US!

Sure.

In fact, you don't even need a visa.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

As a Canadian, you fall under the Visa Waiver Program where no visa is needed for 90 days. Now, the only issue could be that Immigration may start wondering about your trips if they see that you've been coming and going but all you have to do is tell them what you're here for.

close but not quite.

Canadians are NOT part of the VWP. They have a special arrangement. They are permitted up to 6 months at a time in the US without a typical "visa"... heres a site: http://www.consular.canada.usembassy.gov/canadians.asp . You just show strong ties to Canada when you arrive at the border for your visit and you'll be fine.

Best of luck.

Ooooh I see, I didn't know that. So it's a much better situation than people coming under the VWP. Thanks for the info.
