How do you apply for Social Security once you have received your Green Card?

Hey VJs',

I have a question after you have received your Green Card, how do you apply for a Social Security Number (SSN)? This might be a ridiculous question but I don't know the system in the USA as yet. I am just curious. I like to have information on hand at all times.

My fiance and I went to the SSA office in our area last week Wednesday and we received the card yesterday. We filled out the application and submitted his passport along with his I-94. I don't if that helps much because he doesn't have a green card or EAD yet.

WE just took all our documentation to the SSA office and they took care of it all, aside from a wait, it was pretty painless

Mandy it sounds like you are a cr-1 visa, if that's the case you are supposed to get it shortly within arriving in the states. The other posters are K-1's like myself and we applied 2 weeks, 2 days after his arrival and we got it in about 2 weeks.

It's also advisable to fill in your timeline so that people can help answer your questions a lot better im sorry canadian wife is a cr-1 too

If you are a CR-1 visa holder -

then the day you come into the USA, you get a stamp in the passport, that validates the CR-1 visa as a temporary green card.

TWO WEEKS LATER, you can go into any SSA office with yer passport and birth certificate, apply for SSN

Ask the clerk to look you up in the SAVE database by VISA NAME or A#, and if not found, come back a week later, apply again.

I was a CR1 holder and did the same, although I waited 3 weeks. Took my passport, birth certificate and filled in application ( SSN application) and I received my card 6 days later. Good luck!
