The linked video of a report on a (Viet) nail salon in GA makes me shudder. Just reinforces a bad stereotype.

At least Anjelah Johnson's stand up bit is intended to be funny.

Oh no she didnt.. she said "these people"? now thats racist! Overweight people are not specific members of title IV protected classes. There is no discrimination protection for overweight people. The manager could sue that lady for the these people comment.... fatty McButterbutt hasn't got a hoof to stand on... except to cry to a reporter looking to make a stink...

I dont see anything wrong with what the manager did... IMO airlines should have a flat fee plus a graduated weight calc to determine price because of the increased fuel usage and added wear and tear on equip....they charge by the lb for luggage over a certain weight dont they? If the service being performed or the IMPACT of the customer on the equipment is different because of size/weight. there should be no problem with charging more.... as the guy said.. just post the policy... or when you see a biggin heading in the door say sorry the chair cant handle your oversized frame.

In my example I would have to may more for me than Thuy but if it costs the provider more for me then I should have to pay more... why should the provider have to absorb added expenses because I am bigger...

I will just respectfully disagree with you Scott. The airline - pedicure chair link doesn't work for me. Plus, the salon didn't tell the customer (the only source of revenue to a business) beforehand. And if they did see a risk of equipment damage they would come up with a solution beforehand.

If you are open to the general public, one only has to look up and down any US street to see that there are a lot of overweight folks.

Should I impose a fee on my larger customers to use my chairs while they eat the food that I am selling? If they all ordered a half dozen hot dogs and ended breaking chairs I would just have to get stronger chairs for my tubby sources of profits. :)

Sadly it reinforces the streotype of the nail salon industry.

they are pretty sturdy, not sure what the weight limit is. i suppose a fat person can dislodge or loosen the armrest on the side. most of pressure will be in the seat, which is just a cushion. some have fancy massage machnisms on the seat, but most people don't like it so that function is rarely used. some of the weight will add pressure to the back of the chair, most of which also has masaage mechanisms as well. I don't see how a fat person is going to affect that because the rollers will just roll underneath the soft fat.

I don't see how that xtra money is justifiable. xtra wear and tear on the expensive chairs, is the only excuse i can think of, but its a weak excuse.

I don't do nails, so hanging around nail shops and personnel are my only credientials on this.

The chairs in the video looked cheap - fiberglass shell and not much more. I wouldn't be surprised if there really was a 200lb weight limit. I'm no expert on nail salon chairs, but I've seen a gazillion ads for them since I started subscribing to Vietnamese channels on cable TV.

My Vietnamese friend owns a nail salon and was actually the person that introduced me to Oanh. She's been known to openly announce her dislike for black people even though most of her clients are black and my family is African. So yeah, this video doesn't shock me either but it goes to show how much initial impressions can shape/cloud how people relate to one another. If the people from the news story had met each other under different circumstances then they may have ended up being very close friends. Personally I've never been charged extra at a nail shop even though I'm over 200 lbs. Then again as soon as I mention that my wife is Vietnamese, the mood in the place gets a lot happier and I'm suddenly the center of attention.

I feel a little bit funny with this video clip. The Americans are big, so I don't know why they produced such product (the mail chairs) which only can stand for the weight of 200lbs. It is very unprofessional producer.

I watched film "Supersize me!" and recognized that the author was correct about the point "Everything in Americans is big: big house, big car and big people...."
