Yeah I get what your saying. I myself work two jobs in way I guess. I've been furloughed for awhile, so I do freelancing when I have days off.

In fact, if I do get laid off, I have the opportunity to manage a new studio as principal. My job is holding me back from doing it right now because obviously there are risks with helping run a new business. (I kinda need a shove I suppose to take the risk)

I thought you were unemployed? Did you find a new job? If so, congrats.

These stats don't even count the stay at home parents, the recent college graduates who've been looking for work all this time and don't qualify for UI, or those technically unemployed but still able to do some kind of work at regular hours for less than a living wage but trying to make a contribution like babysitters, house sitters, craft makers, ect...

I recently applied for 2 jobs at a TV station where someone I went to college with works and gives me the inside scoop. He told me 81 people have applied for the video journalists job I applied for and that position just opened this week. I also applied for the part time morning production specialist position just to get my foot in the door. I was really bummed recently when I saw a job I applied for at another TV was just taken down this week and I was well qualified for it with over seven years experience and a college degree in the field and I didn't even get a call for an interview. sad.gif Employers here tell us there are 200 applicants for every one job.

risks are always associated with rewards as well as failure

Only you can make the decisions and I as well as anyone of your friends/family would support any decision you make towards that move.

I've actually never been unemployed, but my jobs been in danger for nearly 6 months now.

Aah ok. I misunderstood. My bad.

FWIW my jobs been in danger for about a year. Quite a few rounds of layoffs already, they've thought it fit to spare me so far. What sucks is they recently revised their severance policy, it really sucks now. It used to be very generous.

Well I guess I am one of the stereotypes you hear of more and more. The risk-adverse youth.

Yup.

So if I was laid off I could probably find a contract gig relatively quickly. FTE might take longer.

I'm guessing your all up to date. My father was laid off in the last recession for awhile before contracting and then eventually being rehired in another department of the same company. I think he knows Cobal, Basic etc. which have been out of date for years.

It's not a nice thing to have on the back of your mind, the kind of nagging worry that is not good for your health. It's difficult to have a "well if it happens it happens, no point in worrying about it" attitude.

I can understand why you're holding onto the security, but a new start sounds exciting too. It sounds like you'll be just fine.
