We were so concerned about all the maiden name vs. married name issues that she has kept her maiden name for now. All documents and certificates are under that name. She may change it when she applies to naturalize in a few years.

I also heard that DMV can make a fuss over name changes via marriage when you go to get a license. Did anyone have issues dealing with DMV? Do you have to wait till you get your GC in hand for that?

Nope, DMV was no problem for my husband, except that they are backlogged and he drove about 45 mins to another city to take the test. He only had his passport and SS card.

Since he used his passport w/visa, is his license going to be valid for one year or two years?

Haha, that's for sure!

That's why I'v been holding off getting mine, since I think it's only valid for as long as you can show valid status, 1 year on just the visa VS 2 years with the GC.

sorry i'd been out a while, but you're not alone!!! me and my wife had been dealing with this sh*t too. i called up uscis last monday and my wife ws still not in the system. they admitted that there was a backlog and letters were being delayed. then i called friday and she was finally in the system (5 weeks post PoE). i verified that they had the right name (in the cr-1 visa, she is listed as first in the 1st name, but middle last in the last name space, as opposed to just the last (which is what is confusing the SS folks when we went in person and applied, as they felt that the last name didnt match what was in the visa), which the lady said they did (both agents were actually really nice). i asked about her SS# (now that she was in the system) and the agent said to call the SS assoc and inquire. the issue here is that my wife now has gotten a job and needs the SS# to fill in the w2 and other forms. she is supposed to start aug 2nd and the company told her to get the ss# prior to starting. so now we have to call the SS assoc (in hopes that she will now be in the system, since now she is in the USCIS system) and verify that she indeed has the ss#. the uscis agent said that in all likelihood, that she would actually recieve the ss card prior to receiving the green card.

i guess if not in the system on monday, then my wife'll have to go in person to the SS office and re-apply. if she applies the way her name is listed in the cr-1 visa, then obviously it would be wrong, but she would get the ss card in the mail. but if she applies the way it will show up in the green card, then she might be denied again...although the last time we went, she was not in the system and perhaps the only way the agent had to verify at that point was with what was listed in the passport and cri-1 visa. now that she might be in the system, if she applies the right way, perhaps she may get it (???)...anyway, i guess the 1st thing would be to call the ss assoc tomorrow and keep our fingers crossed that she is in. in either case, i dont think they will tell her the ss# on the phone anyway and she will have to wait till she gets the actual card in her hand to know what it is...or maybe a trip to the SS office needs to be done anyway...

i suppose she can delay her start date if necessary, but wondering by how much...

HR on my new job added me on the system as married name, so of course it didn't match. So they printed that stupid I-verify and told me to go to the office and get a letter explaining I already applied but they are waiting for USCIS's input.

It's such a mess. I have to give something back to HR till next Monday (August 2nd). I know it won't do any good if I go to the SS office but the company needs some sort of letter from them saying I'd already taken care of it.

I feel like screaming every time I think about this whole stupidity. I did everything right, what is the difficulty of printing my GC and sticking it on the mail? Why are they saying USPS returned my GC and welcome letter and at the same time USPS says they didn't????

I may call them again tomorrow and ask for the number of the mail (or smt like that). She said if I have the mail number she can track what happened. She blames that USCIS is lying saying they mailed but they didn't. Arghhhh I don't know what to believe. I doubt USCIS would say they mailed just to make me feel better. But I also doubt the mail lady would lie to me saying she didn't returned it.

stupidity and absurdity is right! :bonk: there really needs to be a better onboarding process, seriously. sorry to hear about all of this, but it seems that at least there seems to be a path forward (incrementally albeit).

my wife had a bit of better luck today - she went to the SS office and explained the situation, now that she's in the system. the agent said that they would need to verify the name information with uscis and all (would take up to 4 weeks), but said that she could work in the mean time she's waiting for the SS card. she was given a letter stating that by SS. her future company said to bring the letter over and that that it should be fine; there's just trying to figure out how to fill the tax papers for them to take her taxes out. so i would say a positive step. now that she's in the system, the uscis agent last friday said that they would be mailing out the letter and green card in the next week to 2 weeks. so i think all this mess will be sorted out once the green card is in our hands (which btw, has the right way her name should be listed)...

we still did not get a welcome letter, GC, or SSN.

do i have to start calling USCIS about the GC????

should we just go straight to an SS office???

we are gonna have him applying for jobs starting this week, so we need to have the SSN soon if that's gonna happen!

ok if you dont have any kind of name mess-ups and everything matches a 100%, then you should be able to just go and apply in the SS office for a new card without waiting for the green card - the passport and CR-1 visa on there is enough. you should however, call the uscis and find out where your welcome letter and green card are.

stupidity and absurdity is right! :bonk: there really needs to be a better onboarding process, seriously. sorry to hear about all of this, but it seems that at least there seems to be a path forward (incrementally albeit).

my wife had a bit of better luck today - she went to the SS office and explained the situation, now that she's in the system. the agent said that they would need to verify the name information with uscis and all (would take up to 4 weeks), but said that she could work in the mean time she's waiting for the SS card. she was given a letter stating that by SS. her future company said to bring the letter over and that that might be able to make that work; they're just trying to figure out how to fill the tax papers for them to take her taxes out, so let's see. so i would say a positive step. now that she's in the system, the uscis agent last friday said that they would be mailing out the letter and green card in the next week to 2 weeks. so i think all this mess will be sorted out once the green card is in our hands (which btw, has the right way her name should be listed)...

ok if you dont have any kind of name mess-ups and everything matches a 100%, then you should be able to just go and apply in the SS office for a new card without waiting for the green card - the passport and CR-1 visa on there is enough. you should however, call the uscis and find out where your welcome letter and green card are.

Once in awhile, right in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale - My beautiful wife Soni

Jezzzzz today was such an awful day!!!

I went to the SS office to get the I-verify BS figured out and when I came back my boss said that HR said if I don't bring my GC by Tuesday I couldn't be able to work there anymore! #######????????????????????

I was so mad you guys! This is not even legal!!! I AM elegible to work, arghhhhh

The HR lady messed up so bad that she confused SSN CARD with GC!!!! Then I talked to her, gave the receipt that SSA gave me proving I went there and she said that would be enough. That the only issue was the name not matching! Arghhhhhh, so why she tells my boss that they would terminate my employment if I didn't bring the GC next week??????? :bonk:

It's crazy!!!!! People really need to start getting things together before saying stuff. I almost cried, so worried!!!!

I was sooo going to sue them if they had fired me because of this. This is not even legal.

Anyway, she said that now everything is fine, but I'm still worried! We never know what to expect after this whole mess. I'm afraid she comes on Tuesday and say that they will fire me!!! I'm already being fired on my head!!!!

I got home and guess what was on the mail???????????? The freaking welcome letter!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually 2!!!

One is dated July 15 and the other July 20.

On the website it says: Document production or Oath Ceremony

On July 20, 2010 we mailed the document to the address we have on file. You should receive the new document within 30 days. If you do not, or if you move before you get it, call customer service at 1-800-375-5283.

So what does that mean? That my GC was mailed on the 20th or the Welcome letter? Maybe they mailed both on July 20th and I got my welcome letter and not my GC yet?

I called USCIS this morning again, and she said she made an inquiry on my behalf asking the service center to mail my GC again. I asked her if I could go and pick it up and she said no mam!

I guess there is nothing I can do anymore. This is so exhausting!!! It was hard already when I was just waiting, but now this is interfering on my job!

I'm so tireddddddddddddddddddd, I'm ready for some tequila's shots right now!
