BLOSSVALE, N.Y. - New York state police say a man who shot a 3-month-old baby to death in front of troopers during a standoff has been shot by officers and wounded.

Police say the armed man was outside a home in the upstate town of Blossvale when troopers arrived after getting a 911 call about a domestic dispute at about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Troopers say they shot the man after he used a long gun to shoot the baby and open fire on officers.

The gunman survived and was taken by helicopter to a local hospital. The baby was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The names and relationships of the people involved haven't been released.

Blossvale is about 30 miles east of Syracuse.

The other problem is that Some State accept Capital Punishment but we have to feed them first, give them time to reflect what they have done.. by the time of execution, we [all tax payer] have had spend thousands of dollars on this unscrupulous individuals. Public Hanging isn't the solution to this. If the immediate threat of deadly force wasn't enough to deter him then the threat of possible future deadly force in public wouldn't have stopped him either.

As for the "Cops should have shot him in the head repeatedly" thought, well it's apparent that deadly force was not only authorized but actually used. Anyone who has ever cared about marksmanship understands that when you want to put a target down a good shot in the "center of mass" is most effective as you're less likely to miss and almost all vital organs are housed there.

No criminal should be summarily executed and no law enforcement officer should ever feel justified in thinking about doing it. We have a system and we should adhere to it, if you don't like the system then work to change it.

I'd also remind you that these "emotional shortcuts" so many want to see exercised on so many criminals could also be used against wrongfully accused so we really need to be careful.
