and what are the advantage to have one?

Yes, you'll need an SSN in order to work legally. It is free & really doesn't take that much time now that you have the EAD.

Actually, you'll need a SSN for everything, from driver license to bank account to credit card to God knows what. You'd have to be like Von Dutch and live in an old school bus, paying everything cash, not having a bank account, and all of that a few decades in the past, in order to live in the USA without a SSN.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . About 3-4 weeks after your arrival here in the US, go to your local Social Security Office to apply for that. You can check that thru this site: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/

Bring your passport -- this would have had your VISA stamp, I-94 card, etc.

SSN is a starting point to get yourself established here. It's free and it is required to establish residence. Ok?
