Hey guys!

I am already in the States with my K1 visa.

I want to get married in California. There are two different marriage licenses here: confidential and non-confidential. Which one do we have to obtain?

Also, if my fiancee changes her last name already in the marriage license application we don't have to pay anything extra (expect the $50 fee for the marriage license). Or is there also a fee for changing the last name?

She could also change her last name later. Does any one knows how much this cost?

thanks,

Adam

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

does anybody know how it works with exchanging the name after you get married? Is there a fee for this?

In California, or at least, in LA County, the woman or the man can say what their name will be after marriage and have that change placed on the marriage licence. You can change both your middle name and last name, but not your first name. There is no additional charge for this. So, on my marriage licence/certificate, it states that I have a new last name as of the date we got married.

If, on the marriage licence, you choose to keep your birth name, but then decide to change it at a later time, you would need to do a legal name change. I am not sure what the fee is for that.

Once you have your marriage certificate, you use it to prove your new legal name and update it on your driver's licence, with your bank, with the SSA, and so on. I've not had any trouble doing this since I was married in February.

Astid,

Hi, which office did you do your biometrics at in L.A? Did you do it in Van Nuys? or one of the offices in Downtown?

We are currently waiting for our biometrics letter but wondered about doing a walk in to speed up the process, there have been mixed reveiws about walk ins so I'd like to hear about your experience.

Confidential marriage license is for couple have been living together and want to hide the actual marriage date. You DO NOT want this type of license.

Other useless trivia: confidential marriage licenses are also sometimes used by people "of public interest" who would like to maintain their privacy.

I agree with Nigeria or Bust, you don't want this type. Part of the proof of relationship is that you're going around like a married couple and not hiding the mere legal matter.

We got the confidential license for us, there is no requirement on how long you have to live together, so as long as you are living together.

You have to choose your new name then, or else I think you might have to pay and go to court if you want to change the name later, not sure how that works, they just told us that you have to choose your new name now if you want to change it.

If you choose this license, nobody can search on the internet and steal your information, if you choose the public license anyone can search and see your license with all your information on it. For me, like to keep my information private, I've already had my identity stolen so I've had enough of that.
