Rand Paul calls Obama's criticism of BP 'un-American'

Say what you want about Rand Paul — and much is indeed said about Rand Paul these days — the GOP's Kentucky Senate nominee does not shy away from controversy.

After a heady tour through Thursday's news cycle — which had Paul first disowning, then hurriedly embracing, some key provisions of the 1964 Civil Rights Act — the tea party favorite and a "small-L" libertarian took to the airwaves Friday to defend the honor of BP, the oil giant involved in the catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

On ABC's "Good Morning America" on Friday, Paul called out President Obama for criticizing BP too harshly in public.

"What I don't like from the president's administration is this sort of, 'I'll put my boot heel on the throat of BP,'" Paul said. "I think that sounds really un-American in his criticism of business. I've heard nothing from BP about not paying for the spill. And I think it's part of this sort of blame-game society in the sense that it's always got to be someone's fault instead of the fact that sometimes accidents happen."

It would greatly help if both politicians and commentators could have a balanced view towards criticism. It's likely to be true that some mistakes were made by BP, some things not done that could have been done somethings done that should not have been - but if fingers are simply pointed and loud noises made, these mistakes take on more significance than they should have, and those being criticized become defensive - so what should be a learning experience becomes a witch hunt. Very silly, but worse unproductive.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Are you joking? They have vastly low balled the rate of the leak. And while we all need to await a full inquiry, it is looking more and more like they knew they had punctured the valve system that was designed to prevent this catastrophe in the first place, and went ahead with actions which precipitated the disaster.

How on earth do you believe BP should get a free pass? Oh that's right, they aren't individuals.

I don't know why anyone is surprised that this oil spill happened to any company other than BP. Those in the chemical or oil industry are well aware of the fact that BP has, by a very huge margin, the worst safety record of any major oil company. The repeated body counts at Texas City testify to that, as do lots of other accidents of theirs that did not kill workers.

The rubber will meet the road when BP starts, as they almost certainly will, to claim that certain damage claims brought against them are illegitimate.

BP has stonewalled the public on the size of this their spill and refuses to acknowledge the huge subsurface plumb that independent scientists have discovered. (That discovery is discussed nicely in a news article in the current issue of Nature.)

For years, companies like BP got to do as they liked without any effective regulation. The regulators were *literally* in bed with them. There's gotta be big changes -- and not along the lines Ron Paul seems to advocate.

Right, the US government never messed with capitalism before. The never broke up AT&T and they never went after Microsoft, just to name a couple. The almighty GOP never broke a union, it was all just a dream.

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.
