No... I'm asking a question, then "shaking my head"!

I want to hear what the right-wing republican, defender of the US military, and slayer of terrorists, mr america himself has to say.

I say that it save a million of lives if the US had to invade Japan and do a land war. Lives of the civilians and of the US Marines and Army.

This was well known at the time, and this is what made Harry Truman decide to use the bomb. Otherwise, every major city in Japan would have been destroyed with the countless loss of a million more lives.

Remember...this was WWII. Ask anyone from NZ or Australia.......it was a fight for survival and we won.

I finally got rid of the never ending money drain. I called the plumber, and got the problem fixed. I wish her the best.

That is the correct answer, but I wanted to know why it had to be posted the way it was?

The battle for Okinawa showed the US leadership how costly it would be to fight the Japanese on their own ground. Total American battle casualties were 49,151, of which 12,520 were killed or missing and 36,631 wounded.

That was one of the major reasons for the choice Harry Truman made.

If anyone is going to try and compare that to what is going on in the Middle East... well... go ahead.

I want to correct this to the point that I meant Allies and not just Americans. My father was in the So Pacific in WW2....he would never want the forget the valient Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, Canadians, etc. that fought along side the US in this war.

I suggest viewing "The Fog of War". Former Defense Secretary, Robert McNamara, has a few things to say about the reasons for dropping the bomb. In fact, many in the U.S. Defense Department knew the Japanese were about to surrender; especially after the Americans had fire-bombed many Japanese cities. The nuclear bomb, some say, was really a display for the Russians.

And, Mr McNamara makes an interesting comment that if America lost the American-Japanese War, that they (ie the U.S. Chiefs) would have been tried as war criminals.

Edit: Furthermore, one would get an interesting perspective on that war if studied from an Asian perspective. The war in the Pacific was an effort by the Japanese to create a Greater Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere, loosen the shackles of Western Imperialism, and to secure scarce resources. The Japanese were envious of becoming a global power just as the Portugese, Spanish, Dutch, British, and the Americans had done before them.

Remember that many of the Western powers that had milked the region for hundreds of years, were weakened by the Japanese, and later kicked out e.g. Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.

Personally, as a Westerner, I'm glad the Americans won.

The world won.. may sound wrong but its how life works.. just like 9/11 .. would it have been better if we could have blown up the planes before they hit the WTC .. yes.. more lives saved the better in my oppinion .. Also Japan was fully aware that the bombs were coming.. well they didn't know about "the bomb" but they new with the Potsdam Declaration that the allies were not messing around.

It was a sad day but a necessary day .. sad to say .. I would prefer no killing.. but .. well that is something that will never happen in this world.

Then why didn't the Japanese surrender right after the first one?

My limited knowledge in this area makes me unqualified to answer such a question. Just as I cannot answer other questions, including:

"Why didn't the Americans stop the Japanese from advancing upon Pearl Harbour, when they knew ahead of time of their plans?"

or,

"Why didn't the American Intelligence agencies stop the attack on the World Trade Centre?"

Personally, as a Westerner, I'm glad the Americans won.

The world won? No, rather, America secured access to scarce resources, and we are a global marketplace for their goods/services ie Slaves to the dominant producers. The Chinese are next.

Robert Macnamara? Wasn't he the policy maker for the conflict in Vietnam?
