Net Neutrality Struck Down

Reporting from San Francisco and Washington - A federal appeals court on Tuesday overturned a Federal Communications Commission ruling that forced cable giant Comcast Corp. to give equal treatment to all Internet traffic flowing through its network.

The decision strikes at the FCC's ability to force so-called network neutrality on telecommunications companies.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled the FCC overstepped its bounds and lacked direct statutory authority from Congress to regulate Internet traffic. Enacting network neutrality rules is a major priority of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, who took over in early 2009.

The court's ruling also could pose legal problems for the FCC as it seeks to enact the expansive National Broadband Policy it unveiled last month.

I thought network neutrality was a good thing?

Figuring the illegal nature of P2P, not necessarily.

There's nothing illegal about P2P. It's about two people exchanging files

without interference. It's as American as apple pie.

Paul will happily put his libertarianism on hold if he believes that by doing so he may kinda sorta piss of a liberal or someone who might be a liberal or someone who was once mistaken for a liberal.

That's like saying mail is illegal because I might mail you cocaine.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

Government has no business telling a business how to be run. If they want to throttle their streams then let them. It is their business model and their reasons so why tell them they can't? I personally don't want to do business with a provider that throttles their streams and will look for one that doesn't do it and give them my money.

So you're in favor of a monopoly that will control your internet service. It's no different than big government.

Bingo.

Slightly OT but something else the FCC (if it actually were working in the best interests of the public, which it consistently doesn't) should do is end the exclusivity that cell phone providers have on mobile devices. If the customer could have ready access to any phone they wanted, the only way the providers would be able to compete with each other would be through offering cheaper plans.

So you blindly support any decision whatsoever, as long as it goes against the government? Net neutrality is a good thing. Yes, sharing pirated movies and music violates copyright laws, but comcast is not in the business of producing or distributing music or movies, so that is a misnomer paul. Comcast only cares about being able to charge a different pay scale for its services.
