Personally I would wait for the greencard. My reason for that being the interview that you may or may not have to attend. At the very least if you choose to go you will need to have someone checking your mail. Also, you will need to obtain a visa. if you wait for the GC you will not need a greencard to enter canada.

** moving from "Adjustment of Status (Green Card) from Family Based Visas" to "Working & Travelling Prior to Getting a Greencard" as this is relating to travel prior to getting your GC**

My case has been shifted to CSC. Moreover, i want to go to canada for a 4-5 days only. Does that affect the outcome of application?

Have you checked if you need a visa to visit canada? Being an LPR of america doesnt take away the need for a visa to visit canada if your country is on the list.

That doesn't seem quite right. According to this:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLish/visit/visas.asp

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

...

-Persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence;

There must be more to that guy's story than simply being a US LPR with no visa. Maybe he didn't have his GC on him.

The OP should bear in mind, though, that if he still waiting for his AOS approval and is traveling on AP documents, he is not yet a US permanent resident, and would definitely need a visa if his country is listed on the Canadian government web page above.

VanessaAndTony are completely correct. You can travel to Canada for 4-5 days. It will not affect your AOS application at all, since you have AP papers. Do NOT leave the US without them, or you will find yourself "locked out". You will not use them upon departure, but they are your only ticket back in.

Because you are [presumably, from your country info] a citizen of India, and have not yet received US permanent resident status, you WILL need a visa from the Canadian government to visit Canada, just as much as any Indian citizen who goes to fly to Canada directly from India. i don't really know how to go about applying for a Canadian tourist visa, but it's probably somewhere in the Canadian government website I linked to previously in this thread. Once you have that visa, you're good to go.

If you decide to hold off on visiting Canada until you have your US Green card, you will not need a visa to visit Canada. You will be able to travel with just your Indian passport and your US GC. That combination of documents will get you into Canada, and back into the US, with no problems whatsoever. Depending on how much it costs to apply for the Canadian visa, how urgent your business in Canada is, and how long the Canadian visa will take to be approved, it may be worth waiting. If the Canadian visa takes 60-90 days to be approved (and I sincerely have no idea, it may be much less than that), you will almost certainly have your Green card by that time anyways, rendering the Canadian visa (in this hypothetical example) a waste of money.
