Once you apply and obtain Advance Parole, you will be able to for sure.

K-1 grants you one entrance to US, it is canceled upon arrival and you get an I-94 for 90 days so you can get married. After that, you apply for AOS/EAD/AP.

If you leave without AP (to my knowledge) you won't be able to come back and adjust status. But don't quote me on that, it's just what I have garnished from everything I've read before.

Слава Україні!

Once you've filed your AOS, if you leave before your AP is granted, they consider that you have abandoned your adjustment. I believe that if, having filed your AOS, you need to urgently travel, you can make an infopass appointment to request an expedited AP. Not sure what the qualifying grounds for needing an expedite would be though.

Otherwise, the average time quoted is 60-90 days post-filing for your EAD/ AP to come through.

Timeline Summary:

K-1/K-2 NOA1 - POE: 9 February - 9 July 2010

Married: 17 July 2010

AOS mailed - Interview : 22 November 2010 - 10 March 2011

ROC mailed - approved: 14 February - 18 June 2013

Citizenship mailed - ceremony: 9 February - 7 June 2017

** moving from "K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedures" to "Working & Traveling prior to getting a Green Card" as the OP is discussing activating his K1, marrying and leaving but not mention AOS first (and so his greencard) so this is the appropriate forum**

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
