LOL...I think Andrew Zimmern tried it on Bizarre Foods. I'd try it...once.

Can't do it. I have seen them swimming in the bayous around where I used to live. No way could I bring myself to eat it. I know that doesn't make sense either because I gladly eat crawfish...

I was invited to a special restaurant that served dog soup by a group of Koreans that I worked with, and that's what I was told by them. But, YMMV. It was a horrible experience and I felt really awful about eating it. Man shouldn't eat man's best friend.

I was told that once myself by some friends and I understand some do that still but it is rare. Since you were in Asia I am sure you have many times heard outlandish stuff that was hard to believe and found out they were pulling your leg. We do the same here to newbies too. I have had Kegogi in soup, grilled, fried and many other ways. To me it was just food at that time but would never eat it here in the states. Many things I have eaten many times over seas I would never eat here and at my age now I probably wouldn't eat now over seas and hence my declining to eat dog when I was last in Vietnam. Youth has many adventures but age has fewer.

For me, the thought of wet fur is not appetizing. :jest:

True story, I met a guy who told me in all honesty that opossums are good eatin'.

Jimmy Carter grew up on opossum. I watched him in an interview, saying he could smell it cooking from miles away...but it wasn't a favorable smell. :jest:

Hard to believe but my father used to make squirrel and it was good. He told me about opossum but I never tried it. He did like to eat snake too and many things that is hard to believe that can be eaten.

I'd imagine squirrel would be tasty because of their diet that is rich in nuts.

They also enjoy eating cats.

Possums that is. And dog food. Possums like to eat dog food, I mean. Not dog food likes to eat cats.

I can't eat animals that I have once considered a pet. My husband likes rabbit, and in Peru another animal that they enjoy is guinea pig :dead: His mother used to raise them and sell them for meat when he was younger. They had chickens too.

I guess having a farm that raises cattle and lamb, and having grown up eating chicken, beef, pork, etc from the farm I don't have much qualms about eating something I knew was alive a couple of hours ago (I don't even mind picking the meat choice for lunch, as long as I don't kill it or see it being killed). In my POV buying it all packed up in the supermarket is still part of an animal that was alive somewhere so makes no difference if it's one that was in my backyard.

I don't think I can eat dog or cat though, as these I've always raised as pets. The rest I'm game for as long as it tastes good and it's not nasty.

Fried alligator tail is incredibly delicious btw, perfect with tartar sauce and beer. It tastes like the perfect mix of chicken and fish flavors. Frog legs are awesome too. I'm not a fan of lamb but if it's grilled over coals the crispy crust tastes awesome, but not a fan of it stewed as it's too gamey.

As far as the talks of possums and river rats, in the northern region of Brasil there are loads of Capybaras, which are basically gigantic rodents, and a good cook can make it tastes delicious (the cook in my family's farm makes it taste almost better than pork roast or lechon asado), some people can't get the excessive game flavor off them though.

It's not kosher to eat rabbits-- it's forbidden in the Bible... ethical would be the less ironic word :P

Precisely right. Rabbits chew their cud (I think?) but they don't have split hooves (they don't have hooves!!). Treif (unkosher).

A kosher animal must both chew its cud and have split hooves.

Cows, sheep, deer, giraffes - kosher.

Pigs, horses, rodents - not kosher.

For fish, the rule is fins & scales, must have both.

Hence, eel, catfish and shark are not kosher. Seafood (shrimps, scallops, lobster, crab, octopus...) not kosher.

Birds of prey - treif. Most other birds are kosher, though not all. (e.g. I don't believe ostrich is kosher).

Insects - not kosher. Worms, frogs, spiders - not kosher. Creepy crawly stuff not kosher.

Microbes (e.g. bread yeast, yoghurt bacteria) - they didn't know from such things in those days. Kosher by default.

Products of a treif animal (e.g. gelatin from animal bones) - usually treif.

Hmmm...interesting. Ok, I say to those who eat bacon - try some rabbit. :jest:

Scandal, every time I see a list of kosher and non kosher food I am glad I'm Brazilian, got no religion and no rules. I LOVE seafood!

And it can get even more odd (to me).

I bought a rather pricey Dishwasher.

when I went to install it, it actually had separate directions for how to install it in a kosher way, something about how and where to run the drain lines.
