Just when you think you can get ahead AFTER paying the government their taxes... Adams car has an issue! A $575 issue! The diagnostic test shows that its the Motor Mount and Transmission mount! Labor is $388 plus tax!! Grrrrrr!

Anyways, any car folks know if its better to look on ebay or somewhere for cheaper parts? The two motor mounts are $48 a piece and the trans mount is $124.

Plus, it seems strange that his PT Cruiser is only 4 yrs old and has 51k... why would motor mounts go out so soon!?

Because it's a crappy car that has been selected into the eclectic circle of the 10 worst cars of the new Millennium recently.

If the water pump on a PT Cruiser needs to be replaced, which is just a matter of time, the whole front of the car has to come apart, the exhaust manifold has to be removed, as no human being, no being aside from a baby octupus, to be more precise, can reach in there.

That said, you will be able to get those parts from Rock auto for about half the dealer price. And, since changing motor mounts is a fairly easy thing to do, I suggest to get the help of some friends and do it yourself on a weekend. Yes, he can do it, even if he's not a mechanic. All that's needed is a jack and a wooden block to lift first the engine, then the tranny up enough to change the mounts.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

motor mounts and transmission mounts usually have steel parts that bolt to the chasis on one end, and the motor or transmission on the other side. there will be a rubber bushing in between, and it is the rubber that wears out.

replacing them can be done by driving the car up onto ramps or jacking the car one side at a time to put wooden blocks under the frame rails so that a person can get underneath. the placement and size of the wooden blocks is important, in terms of safety. base should be transverse, and equal to height. minimum width should be 8 inches. rear tires should be parking braked and chocked before jacking begins.

removing the worn out mount assmeblies is something that can be done with a good socket set and a piece of pipe slipped over the end of the ratchet handle as a cheater bar. the part having mount replaced should be supported by a jack of some sort during the process. the replacement parts should have hardware torqued appropriately.

before beginning, develop a repair plan detailing all steps. internet car forums are good for this, with pictures and hardware details and such. google is your friend.

safety first, even with a lightweight car like this. supports should be adequate, and no shortcuts taken in the raising and lowerign of the car, and in it's supprot during the repair.

Couple thoughts.

As was mentioned Google your car type and "replace motor mounts" you will find forums with step by step instructions.

I would first try Youtube ya never know, I found a vid on fixing my keyboard, right down to the exact model laptop.

If you don't feel up to the job, I would check on Craigs list, a number of cheap mechanics will help you.

The first step is to get the parts, just having them yourself will cut your bill down no matter who you hire to do it (if you don't do it yourself).

*Find those auto forums, the detailed info is unbelievable.

Check these guys out. They are very reliable and ship fast. Usually free shipping too. You can probably save $60 to $70 on the parts (I looked them up).

I hope Spook sees this.. My friend had a civic with 180k on it and had only changed the oil 6 times.

If it's only 4 years old, the power train warranty should cover this.

that's not exactly something to brag about - that's 30k on one oil change.
