President Barack Obama has signed a one-year extension of several provisions in the nation's main counterterrorism law, the Patriot Act.

Provisions in the measure would have expired on Sunday without Obama's signature Saturday.

The act, which was adopted in the weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, expands the government's ability to monitor Americans in the name of national security.

Three sections of the Patriot Act that stay in force will:

_Authorize court-approved roving wiretaps that permit surveillance on multiple phones.

_Allow court-approved seizure of records and property in anti-terrorism operations.

_Permit surveillance against a so-called lone wolf, a non-U.S. citizen engaged in terrorism who may not be part of a recognized terrorist group.

Obama's signature comes after the House voted 315 to 97 Thursday to extend the measure.

The Senate also approved the measure, with privacy protections cast aside when Senate Democrats lacked the necessary 60-vote supermajority to pass them. Thrown away were restrictions and greater scrutiny on the government's authority to spy on Americans and seize their records.

I thought you guys would have appreciated the fact that this is a guy who runs on logic and principle, rather than, I'm a lib and will do the opposite to repubs.

there was a lot of bitching about the Patriot Act when GWB was in office and now a liberal president signs on. i don't watch TV, but i'd love to know if the liberals will complain at the same level as when GWB was in office or will they bow their head and whisper to themselves "guess GWB was right."

I understand, but you know they will definitely ###### about this too. What I was getting at is that is says something that Repubs cannot give this guy any praise, even when he continues a understandable law implemented by Bush.

There's nothing new here. Obama has always supported giving our law enforcement and military the tools they need to protect Homeland security, consistent with our Constitution and laws. Anyone who actually pays attention to what he says and does would know this.

Fact Check: Obama's Consistent Position on the Patriot Act

January 05, 2008

Rhetoric: "Sen. Obama Promised to Support Repealing PATRIOT Act, Then Voted to Extend It"

Reality: Obama Has Consistently Said He Would Support A Patriot Act That Would Strengthen Civil Liberties Without Sacrificing The Tools That Law Enforcement Needs To Keep Us Safe

...

2006: Obama Voted For a PATRIOT Act Reauthorization Bill That Included Three Key Changes Designed to Prevent Abuse of Authority By Law Enforcement.

i agree, replubs should give obama some praise where deserved. I guess it is all about NOVEMBER now and they can't risk any positive obama soundbites getting in any campaign ad.

for anyone that watched "the wire" (i have the DVDs) will know they talked a lot about "the game." on the streets of baltimore, the drug dealing world blamed everything that happened on "the game" ... it wasn't "personal" they were just playing "the game" .... in washington, the game rules as well.

we do. He is guaranteeing a Republican landslide in the Fall. I am happy about it, and I am not even a Republican. So far he has accomplished exactly...d1ck.

Understandable as well. After all, Repubs did an awesome job over the last 8 years. Deficits were down, budgets balanced, wars won, every who "worked hard" had a minimum $100K in the bank, America ranked first in most international studies that compare countries in various areas and so on..

Why would you wonder that?

Why is it assumed that every opinion is motivated by partisanship? Its silly.

The same liberals on this forum who claimed the Patriot Act was a massive attack on our constitution are now largely silent as Obama follows W's lead on this issue. They did it for partisan advantage then and now it's a dead issue.

So far Obama's record on spending and unemployment has been far worse than Bush's numbers yet we're told he's "saved" the economy. Not sure which studies you're referring to as there was little change from 2001-2008 in the U.S. vs. the rest of the world. Must be the sames fools that didn't know most Americans had zero in savings which wasn't much of a change from pre-Bush years.
