I was just thinking the other day how my husband and I see some everyday things differently.

For instance, he bought some hamburger buns at the store recently. In the morning he loves to have some sort of bread with butter and jam or Nutella on it. So, I was going to grab a couple of pieces of bread from the loaf for him, but he insisted on the hamburger buns. I said, "These are for hamburgers." He thought that was weird and said bread is bread...which is true I suppose. LOL. So he eats the hamburger buns for breakfast with his tea. He also thought the wedding traditions of not seeing each other before the wedding and keeping the cake top for your first anniversary was very weird. Most things he just goes along with I think..but sometimes rolls his eyes and raises his eyebrows at.

I just wondered what other different perspectives on everyday things (or common American things) are very different between you and your SO.

Well, I'll throw one out there.

My wife has this obsession about not wearing shoes in the house.

Yeah I know it's a small thing and you'd think I could get w./ the program but I'm not quite there 100% yet.

In fact, I have corrupted her to the point where she will even wear them down stairs, I figure in another decade or so, I will be allowed to not only wear my shoes around the house but also put them up on the sofa.

Blu, this thread would seem to fit even more nicely in the "Moving Here" forum. How about you "report" it (to a Moderator) and request that it be transferred there, si man?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Then again, we nutty OTers may enjoy kicking it around too.

My wife, for reasons I simply can't fathom, can't seem to appreciate the valuable time I spend on VJ ...... now why do you suppose that is? :P

Point duly noted, si man; in fact, in the "Moving Here" forum, there still is what used to be a lively (& worthy) thread on this very topic. It shouldn't be too far down the pages. You, Blu, & others would certainly enjoy it, si man. Nothing wrong with having something similar in both places, no man.

I always shut mine up by responding, "Another couple just got hosed in Guayaquil, and I need to help them out, si man," si man. This may not work for everybody, no man. :)

Should you, she, or we feel most sheepish about that... or, should we not feel them at all and keep our hands to ourselves? :)

My SO was super shocked when I told him that I find it odd to share a comforter instead of using seperate comforters! I am used to having my own space in bed and having my own darn comforter but he just wants one for the both of us.. I guess it's a cultural thingy. Sleepless nights ahead of me. I'll get over it eventually I'm sure

She is Russian and you think you will get her to wear shoes in the house? Or go barefoot. Get real.

I would be happy if my wife would learn to use the refrigerator.

To be honest your husband is the first European I have heard of that will actually eat the packaged "chemical bread" we have in the USA for any purpose. Alla thinks it is unhealthy even to feed to the birds. For whatever advantages we offer, our mass produced bread isn't one of them.

I see this as a personal thing, not really cultural. Some people like to sleep while snuggling. Some people need their sleep space.

We just had the strangest (to me) conversation about refridgerating foods. He made some pork chops a few nights ago (he's a great cook...). He accidently forgot to put it in the fridge, and I was unaware they were left out too, or else I would have put them away. Anyway, he could not understand why I decided the next afternoon to feed them to the dogs and not eat them as leftovers (he doesn't even do leftovers for the most part.) His reasoning was that if we could leave some leftover cake covered up on the kitchen counter, why not cooked meat. Not sure if the is a cultural thing or not, but he says in Holland, he would have eaten them the next day, refridgerated or not.

Also, he thinks rinsing the soap off the dishes we are handwashing, instead of just wiping it off with a dishtowel is the oddest thing, and a waste of water! Thank God for our dishwasher that RINSES off the soap first, THEN drys it. He told me his family was gonna get a big kick out of that when he tells them, for some reason. lol
