Hi, I am not sure if this is the proper forum to post this but I will give it a shot.

I am a US Citizen and I am engaged and will be marrying my Fiance who is from thailand in May 2010. She has currently been here almost 2 years on a J1 Visa. I would like to know what needs to be done for her mother to come to the USA on a visitor visa for our wedding and to stay about 2 weeks.

Since my Fiancee doesnt currently have a green card, I am not sure on this procedure. Is her mother responsible for getting the visa through the embassy in thailand? Is there anything I can do to help the process?

Really need some help with this if anyone knows!

Thank you,

Mike

Your future MIL would apply for a tourist visa on her own. She would need to show strong ties to home.

Does your fiancee's J1 have a 2 year home residency requirement?

No her Visa and DS-2019 have checked that she is not subject to the 2 year home residency agreement.

Ok so she applies, but there is nothing we can do on our end to help? Write invitation letter etc?

As far as stong ties to home, I dont think that should be a problem. She has 2 sons, grandchildren sisters, father that are still in thai.

You can write an invitation letter.

Good that you've explored the J1. It's caught a few by surprise.

Strong ties are home ownership, spouse, dependents, assets, employment.

Yes, you can send to her a invitation letter. She will have for sure ask in the US embassy the tourist visa. Your letter explaining the reasons why she wants to come to USA might help more.

Thanks for the responses. Should we just compose a letter that she can bring with her to the embassy?

Have your fiance look over these links from usvisa4thai.com. They're the experiences of other Thai women who have gone through the same thing.

If things are quiet when I get home, I'll translate Khun Jo's expereince for you. It seems to be the best. Not only did her mother get to attend her wedding in the States, her mother's tourist visa is good for 10 years.

Good luck!

10 years is normal for a visa, 6 months for entry.

YMMV

My Fiance is brining up some points that I am not sure about..

She says when the embassy asks her mom who her daughter is, and what she is doing in the USA. She is afraid when she tells them she is in the USA on J1 status in an aupair program until July, and when she tells them she is going to get married in May (before he J1 expires) she is worried that the embassy is going to think she just wants to stay here. And she says when it comes time for our AOS interview, she is afraid they will have a record of this and deny her based on this.

"Yes, you can send to her a invitation letter. She will have to ask in the US embassy for the tourist visa. Your letter explaining the reasons why she wants to come to USA might help more.

"

My Fiance:

i know that

and embassy will ask my mom

who is you duagther

what is she doing there?

if my mom said aupair

and when i finish program

?

mom said i finish on July

well

they will ask back

i finish in July why have a wedding in May?

they will think i try to stay here

and when we take turn to interview here

my document might be blocked from the embassy

people said in that web

most they have k1

all they sent document to immigration before they have wedding

when they have recive back

So she bascially says that most people have K1's in progess already before filing the letter to embassy for their parents.

please shed some light on this..

Thanks

She sounds confused.

She is here in legal status and is getting married.

Her Mother wants to come to the wedding.

Only problem I see if she tries to go away from the truth.

Well, i think from what shes trying to tell me is the embassy in thai is very sctrict and she didnt want to have her mom tell them her daughter is on a J1 status and is going to get married. She is just worried that since no paperwork has been filed yet (we arent married) and shes not here on a fiance K1 visa then she thinks some flags will be set off when her mom files to come here as a visitor. Actually her host family's lawyer actually told her that her aupair host family, should actually send the letter/documents with her mom in thai to the embassy because it looks better coming from the people she is staying with here in the USA, and the lawyer told her to file the invitiation letter and just say its for visit, nothing about a wedding.

I think she is confused to, but she is just concerned from what she read online.
