Ok I am in a bit of a pickle. I am taking a trip to Peru with my husband on March 19 for ten days. I previously had a passport in my maiden name. I say previously because I have lost it!!! I know I need to report it missing and then apply for a new passport. My question is how long does it take to get the new passport? I am considering paying for it to be rushed. Also, I know to change my name to my married name I need to provide them with a copy of my marriage certificate. Will I have any problems providing a marriage certificate from Peru that is translated? Just wondering because I had some problems with my foreign marriage certificate at NC DMV.

Thanks for your answers!

Expedited passport is $160 http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/first/first_831.html

It says expedited service is 2-3 weeks door-to-door delivery.

Not sure how close you are to one of the big Passport Agencies - they do same day passports if traveling within 14 days or in life/death situation. I know we have one here in Chicago. Here's the link: http://www.travel.state.gov/passport/passport_4312.html

When my fiance applied for his passport back in 2007, he paid for the fast service, they quote 3 weeks but because of the law changes for anyone traveling to countries that previously didn't require passports, the passport service had been absolutely flooded. It actually took more like 5 weeks, from him upgrading to fast from regular. In all, it took him 17 weeks to get his. Waited 12 and then upped the service to expedite and took another 5. They may have caught up now, at least I hope they have!

There was also an option to get an appointment at a passport office to get it same day but they are few and far between (he would have had to travel to San Francisco from Arizona for his) and if you have applied for a postal fast service, you can't change it to a counter one. Double check that the rules are still the same, as we're talking nearly 3 years ago.

Can't advise on the translated marriage certificate - no experience with that!

If you can get to an office that handles the expedited applications, then it can be had within 2 days - check the website for making an appointment for walk-in service. Do Not 'do this' at any post office.

Otherwise, expect 1 to 6 weeks, even with expedite, for mail-in service.

I suggest walk in - as if you have any issues with your paperwork or documents, you'll find out RIGHT THERE, RIGHT THEN--which might be useful to you, yes?

Thanks for all the great responses. I have to go in person because it stats "To replace your lost of stolen U.S. passport, submit the following forms in person at a Passport Agency or Acceptance Facility". Has anyone had any experience in using the acceptacne facilities? I know the County Clerk of Court is an acceptance facility, but I am not sure if this will take a significant amount of time. I can drive to the passort agency there is one about 4 hours away.

go to passport agency office.

the 'judges office' will waste yer time, if in fact you NEED an expedite.

that bubble has long been overcome.... I requested via regular process for my daughter back in December and it took only three weeks

YMMV
