A friend of mine (USC) recently received a letter from Department of Homeland Security stating that she is on a "No Fly" list for international flights and therefore will not be permitted to fly at this time (or in the forseable future). This is all stemming from an incident from before 9-11-01 when she had a panick attack and freaked out on a domestic flight. At that time she was put on a "No Fly" list for domestic flights, but has since been able to clear her name by going to a doctor, getting put on anxiety medication, and getting the doctor to write a letter on her behalf stating that she is no longer a risk for such incidences. She was unaware that she was on some sort of International "No Fly" list, and hasn't been able to figure out how to clear her name.

Any ideas? What could be some steps she takes at this point? What is the difference between clearing her name from the domestic no fly list to an international one?

She did call the Dept of Homeland Security and when she asked if there is "statute of limitations" on these kinds of things was told "Well, Ms. Do you think there is a statute of limitation on TERRORISM?" She was also told she could get in line with the thousands of other people who are wanting to clear their name from such lists. Not quite sure what that means in a practical sense.

She is suppose to be flying with her brother to Russia to pick up two children that he is adopting in the next few months.

Thanks for any ideas

I gather that means she has to "get in line with the thousands of other people who are wanting to clear their name from such lists." And can't fly internationally until she does.

How does anyone deal with the 1,525 government agencies that most were formed in the last 40 years? They can do no wrong, try testing this in a federal court. And most are exempt from the US Constitution, this kind of edged into our society in the last 40 years.

I think you hit the nail on the head, NickD. How does she do that? What does that mean to get in line and fight it?

I couldn't figure out if that meant getting a lawyer? Whose jurisdiction is this? What do it mean to fight something like this?

She thought it meant going to the doctor, getting on meds, and getting a letter stating that she was cleared. She did that, and she was cleared to fly domestically. She never knew there was some other process for international flights. So...umm...now what?

Have her contact her Senator. They should have a liason for these kinds of things.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I am sure that one just needs to have faith in our government to do the right thing like the sheep here. So expect it all to end soon. Also just be glad that when the Socialists control the medical care in this country that it will be different and not like what historically our government does.

her Dr. can classify the anxiety as a disability and she could have a great lawsuit against DHS for discrimination... as a direct result of her disability she is being denied access to international travel...

I wonder what jurisdiction the US government TSA list has over international flights that don't go to the US at all. For example, could she drive to Canada or Mexico and catch an international flight from one of those countries? I don't know the answer.

I could imagine that the TSA might share its list, and while the TSA might be powerless to directly order Mexican authorities to deny boarding, the Mexican authorities might just deny boarding anyway.

Or maybe not. Just some thoughts...

I'm starting to take a real shine to your posts.

Regardless of what the subject of the OP might be, you can pretty much predict the carbon copy luckytxn response.

She needs to contact DHS for a Redress number, under the "DHS TRIP" procedure. Details from http://www.dhs.gov/files/programs/gc_1169676919316.shtm

Good luck with that! :)

The TSA shares their list with several foreign intelligence agencies and those agencies share information with the USA. Most notably the USA shares the info with UK, Can, Aus, and NZ. The governments in those countries determine if they want to enforce a no-fly list of their own.
