Am I too naive to believe that people who do good and also believe in XYZ religion are really doing good because they feel it is the right thing to do within themself, not because someone told them too...either in a place of worship or in a book. How does that account for people who don't believe in XYZ still being able to do good?

That's exactly why I've never bought into organized religion. I never liked the idea that the only path to salvation means accepting Jesus Christ as your lord and personal savior. Or that you must believe that Mohammed is the Prophet of God and if you don't, you're going to hell. What about all the good people who are not Christian? What about all the good people who never heard of Mohammed? I cannot believe a just and loving God would condemn good people on a technicality!

If God requires us to be of a certain religion in order to achieve salvation (along with being a good person, doing good works, etc.), then He would have made it certain that everyone has fair and complete access to that religion. Islam fails that test because Islam was revealed to one man and in one language. That gives Arabs and Arabic speakers an unfair advantage into understanding Islam. Christianity fails, too, because it spread slowly through the world. What about all the people in China (for example) from 33 A.D. until contact with the Jesuits over a thousand years later? They all went to hell cause they weren't Christian?

I believe religion should be a personal thing. You keep religion in your heart. You don't judge others or wear your religion on your sleeve. God will take care of everyone, regardless of what they personally believe about Him. Just do your best to do good and I believe you'll be fine. :)

um you might wanna check that. the koran was "rewritten" along the way by a caliph and he burned other copies that conflicted with his version.

I'm not saying you're right or wrong because I have no idea. But I've never heard that. And besides, Islam spread pretty darn quickly (geographically speaking), I don't see how any caliph could have possibly burnt every existing copy from northern Africa to South/Southeast Asia.

While we're linking things, here's another perspective on the compliation of the quran.

I wish I could edit - This article specifically addresses Abu Musa's and Ubbay bin Kaab's 2 extra surahs and Ibn Mas`ud's reaction.

For a much longer read, this book also discusses these issues.

You may not like to hear what it takes to gain salvation but the thing is - God can do what He wants, no? He created us and the world, therefore He can decide what the guidelines are for salvation. If He wanted us all to wear purple clothes on every Tuesday to get to heaven, well, I'm surely not about to say no to my Creator!

I'd much rather know and spend time around an Atheist or Agnostic who is a good person, than a religious person who is horrid.

So you guys don't even KNOW how your own holy book came to be written?

Of course we do :) We just tend to interpret certain historical events surrounding the compliation of the Qur'an differently than certain ex muslim scholars.

So only those that aren't members of the religion have false info?

Not necessarily. I've seen a diversity of opinion among non muslim scholars of islam. Some I agree with, others I do not.

Christianity has its mad bastards too. Representative? I doubt it...

"Something inside me is exploding to get out, and I don't know what it is. Its kind of like I want to do cartwheels around the neighborhood."

"Got that dancing feeling on the inside of me."

"I have been having rapture dreams and I can't believe that this is really it! We are on the edge of eternity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Whoa! I can sure feel the glory bumps..."

"I too am soooo excited!! I get goose bumps, literally, when I watch what's going on in the M.E.!!"

"I am excited beyond words that the struggle of this life may be over soon and I can finally be FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!"

I must have missed the spot in the Bible where Jesus tells us to rejoice in the suffering of others... Probably in the same place as the mythical 72 virgins.

What a bunch of evil-hearted, hate-mongering, incompassionate arseholes.

Sooooo. You TROLL around Christian Forums. How interesting. Anyone can TROLL around a forum and cut and past passages to make someone look bad. Congratulations. Done any TROLLING around this forum lately?

But if you were Christian, you would believe and know that when Jesus died on the cross, he said he would come again to judge the living and the dead and the end times began at that moment. Not even the angels in heaven know God's plan for the world. I personally hope that when Jesus does come again, that I have been a faithful enough servant too him. I can understand their excitement, even though I think it is a bit premature. They do not wish harm or suffering of others, they simply feel it is a sign of what is to come and are excited to see God's plan to save the living unfold.

Actually the technical name would be 'lurking'.

What's interesting is that at the outset I made clear that I don't believe people like this are representative of christianity as a whole (in fact I believe I said that several times).

Personally I find it slightly ironic that so many people have assumed (incorrectly) that I am of atheist beliefs (because I have a tendency towards secular opinions on a number of issues).

I consider myself a Christian by virtue of my cultural upbringing and its as much a part of my personality, makeup and values as it is with anyone else. The fact that I don't attend church or organised religious services does not preclude me from having spiritual beliefs, or indeed from criticising others (who IMO) use those beliefs dishonestly for political purposes.

Why did I post this? Its a troll thread, to be sure - I don't deny it. But is it any more or less offensive than the dozens of muslim hate threads that have sprung up on here over the last few weeks. Does it add anything to our understanding of fundamentalism (outside of showing that any religion is prey to being hiacked by crazies? No - but its interesting to see how many people appear to have been offended by it (compared to say the muslim threads).

If anything, seeing as I (broadly) share the religion - that gives me rather more than a token right to voice an opinion, don't you think?

I agree 100%. Now will you condemn the Islamic terrorists?

I have done, on numerous occasions - I simply disagree with the tactics used to combat it, and the throwaway philosophy of 'collateral damage' and 'anything goes'. That's a fair distillation of my views.
