I see a lot of posts about people being homesick of Canada - how can you not be right?

ell, I thought with the holidays coming up I know there are some that get to go home, but others that don't. I find it always more tough to go home, because then I don't want to leave, and I just long for going back! Thought I'd get some opinions from those who have struggled with homesickness/are homesick for the good ole' Motherland. What things do you do to help get yourselves through those rough days?

Merry Christmas everyone!!! :)

Maybe I should rephrase this -- what has helped you in your adjustments to life here in the U.S.A?

I'm still not fully adjusted yet, just being able to take it easy and not being pushed is the only way for me. I tend to retreat if I'm pushed. But thats just me. I never really thought I move away from home so its been alot harder then I could of Immagined. Plus ppl are just weird here.

Speaking on behalf of my SO, she manages her homesickness by staying in close contact with her family back home. She uses email, IM, phone, and Skype video. These things can't ever replace actually being there, but it does give her a lot of comfort knowing that family and friends are just a few keystrokes away.

Samer here. It is hard not to be there for so many things, but thanks to technology I have managed to still be a part of my peeps' livez back home. :(

Thanks everyone. I know every part of the U.S. is different. I went to school in Virginia where everyone was SO nice and caring, and now we live in D.C. where everyone would run you over if they could...so it's getting used to the change of life pace and attitudes! :P

I think if I could find work here it would make life easier... but 3 years and no work is driving me insane... I miss Old Blighty and I miss India... this country will never be my home.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

Conditional Green Card dated 24th October 2007

I feel the same way, Melo. I found work, then the company moved to Panama, then the crisis hit and nobody can find work here now.

I feel like I don't belong most of the time, and since I'm not working I don't get to make friends, meaning I'm either with my husband and his family, or online with mine, but I don't have peepz to hang out with in person the way I used to back home. Luis has just joined the Air Force so who knows where we'll be living next year, but I plan to make the best out of it and find a job or a course to keep me busy and hopefully meet people.

I will always miss home and know that if I were living in Brasil I'd be happier in some senses, but I love my husband and I rather have him here and be there without him. We talk about moving there though, after retirement we just might.

I think making friends is huge. I've made 'work friends' and made friends with some of my husband's friend's wives, but haven't made any on my own, so that can be difficult sometimes.

A lot of it is looking forward and embracing all the freedom and opportunity that America is made of.

Looking back isn't going to make it easier.

This is a great country full of good people.

In the end it will be anything you want to make it.
