Elsewhere in this volume she talks about creationism, saying she “didn’t believe in the theory that human beings — thinking, loving beings — originated from fish that sprouted legs and crawled out of the sea” or from “monkeys who eventually swung down from the trees.” In everything that happens to her, from meeting Todd to her selection by Mr. McCain for the Republican ticket, she sees the hand of God: “My life is in His hands. I encourage readers to do what I did many years ago, invite Him in to take over.”

This is not a partisan issue. My views of her would be the same if she had a (D ) or an (R ) after her name.

This is not a question of ideology, or politics, or patriotism, or any of the standard benchmarks of whether a public figure is "fitting" to be treated as a serious heavyweight contender for national ambitions.

This is not a question of her gender, her skin color, her age, her sexual orientation, her religion.

This is a very simple matter.

A person may choose not to "believe" that 2+2 = 4, or that the earth revolves around the sun, or that matter is composed of subatomic particles which are bound together with the basic forces of nature into atoms and then molecules. A person may believe any of those things. A person may also believe there are alien abductions on a daily basis going on as we speak. A person is free to believe what they like, and they are no less a person. But I would shudder to think that ANY such person would be seriously considered as a person of significant standing on the important issues of the day.

Sarah Palin does not believe that humans descend from primates, and further back from more primitive mammals who came from reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrate animals. For all I care, she can believe we come from a Union of the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus one cold January night. But that certainly don't make it so! And I cannot fathom how she could be treated as a person of substance, given her beliefs.

Here's my Christmas present for Sarah Palin. It's a book. A much better book than hers, of that I have very little doubt.

There are credible and serious Republicans. Many of them are staunch conservatives with whom I can disagree on policy. But they earn my respect as leaders of substance. I think Gingrich is one. I'd never vote for him, but I take his views seriously. Palin is utter trailer trash. She makes dubyah look like a serious intellectual.

The "left" would love to see Palin get the GOP ticket because she is practically unelectable... she consistently gets the highest disapproval ratings when compared to other GOP candidates. She is one of those politicians that most people either love or hate & given the polarization that already exists the last thing our country needs is a President that further polarizes the nation. Now I know critics will say the same about President Obama, but his approval ratings were over 70% for a brief period of time (which means even some Republicans approved of him). As I recall Palin's approval numbers are in the 30-40% range.

Obama's are at 46% so, if she's at 40 then she's gaining on him!
