any one get your last name changed after getting divorce, so will i have to change all paper work back to my maiden name? including social, driver license...how about bank account, and credit card? how about the 2 yr green card?

thanks

You do not have to change your name after a marriage or a divorce, it is your option (in the USA anyway) But yes, if you change your name you need to change it with everyone, submit a copy of the divorce certificate with your request to change name. You will need a new bank account and credit cards if they were jointly held. Close the old accounts and open new ones, in your name only.

Your two year green card is conditional on you being married to the petitioner...you know what that means?

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

No need to post all that 3 times. :)

What paperwork are you worried about being messed up?

Essentially, if you change your name in one place you need to change it everywhere. But you're not required to change your name at all, only if you want to.

i mean after i got my name changed, i'm going move to another state then they will ask me show my Green card (with my husband's last name) and with my final divorce decree with my maiden last name, probably they will ignore to transfer my diver license with 2 different names

Your divorce decree will be in your married name. Unless for some odd reason you opt to legally change your name before filing the legal papers. Or you never changed your last name in the first place. Your name is not automatically changed when you get divorced.

You will have the chance to change your name legally through the divorce. If you dont do it then, then it can be an expensive process. Your divorce decree will be your other proof of name change for DMV purposes.

To add a bit...

USUALLY there can be a 'name revert' order, or paragraph, in the divorce decree. To the OP - what does it say about 'reverting to maiden name'?

If I were in your shoes - I suggest starting with the SSA office first. Whilst yer waiting, take copies of your divorce decree to the bank, get the accounts changed, or have new ones made.

re: the green card as 'work authorization' - it's still valid, but you might want to show all documents when you're filling out an I-9.

Good Luck!

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Why didn't anyone tell me this when I got divorced? ;)
