About the spanish "te quiero", I don't know if it's the same in other spanish speaking countries, but here, in my Buenos Aires Querido, it means affection but not in the romantic way...it's more like the affection you have for a friend, family member...altough it may be used early in a relationship, when you have some feelings for the other but you are not yet in love.

Bottom line...Go with "Te Amo"!

I've been told that while saying "Phom rak khun" is understood, it really isn't anything on Thai would say to another. Songs lyrics usually say "Chan rak teur" and that is actually more polite/respectful/loving.

"Teur" is a woman whom you know intamately"

"Hhun" is pretty much your average joe, respectfully.

"Phom" means "hair" and is a way of saying "I" so that everyone is higher status than you (generally polite, and a common slang was of saying "I" for a man)

"Chan" places you higher up on the social status rung (which you are)

It is polite to say Phom, but it is not really good to use a lower status pronoun than you are. I do it all the time - I never use anything but Phom, personally, but that is knowing that it doesn't really translate .. especailly when saying something as intimate as "I love you" Of course, coming up with just the right social status is more complicated than Calculus II...

Habibi (to male or female) or Habebty (to female only) translates to MY LOVE, not I love you. But, it's not "wrong" to use it as a term of affection. It's the same as MI AMOR in Spanish or MI AMORE in Italian. And it is used a lot, just like the English term BABY.

QUERIDO means wanted or dear one. You can start a letter to your mom with QUERIDA MAMA - like Dear Mom. So, you're right, it's generally used for affection. The two terms TE QUIERO and TE AMO can be used to express love. But, TE AMO is the strongest way to say it, and you would say it to someone you love intimately or are in love with.
