MI mom told to stop babysitting for neighbors

MICHIGAN (NBC) - A Michigan mother could be punished for her good deed.

What did she do wrong?

She watched her friends' children as they waited for the school bus.

The school bus comes after Lisa Snyder's friends need to leave for work.

With before school programs disappearing and choices limited, they all thought they were doing the safest thing by having Snyder keep an eye on things in the mornings.

Lisa Snyder's is the friend all working moms wish they had.

For less than an hour every morning, the Michigan mother of two, watches her neighbors' kids before they get on the school bus so their moms can get to work on time.

But this friendly gesture has landed her in trouble with the law.

Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services.

It notified Snyder that if she has cared for unrelated children for more than four weeks, she is running an unlicensed daycare and could face jail time and fines.

Michigan says they are acting in the interest of protecting the children and that they must investigate all complaints of unlicensed child car.

State representative Brian Calley is working on legislation to protect people like Snyder who are simply helping out their friends, as long as no money is changing hands.

Wow my mom watches my kids and I pay her to pick them up from school, but it's not much. I get a grandma discount. This is just stupid verbal agreements between friends and family shouldn't be the governments business. That's dumb.

the safety of the children is at stake. unliscensed day cares, for cash or not, are a major cause of communicable illness among children. children's services shutz them down regularly in penna. hep a, lice, influenza, chicken pox, measels, you name it, kids got it, and if improperly supervised they will spread it.

Here in America, Kids are all required by law to be immunized against all of that so that's invalid. We have to provide immiunization records every year.. trust me I know, it's annoying...

I'm left wondering if there's more to the story or it's just a case of no good deed goes unpunished. On the surface it seems like an over-reaction by the Michigan Department of Human Services.

Here in America, Kids are all required by law to be immunized against all of that so that's invalid. We have to provide immiunization records every year.. trust me I know, it's annoying...

you must be living in whitebread America, and are totally unaware of what goes on in other places. universal immunisation is a pipe dream, especially in places with high numbers of illegals and impoverished. schools don't even ask in those kinds of places. BTW, you can't immunize against hepA efffectively, or lice, or influenza.

To me, lice and the flu really aren't a big deal.

I've had lice, I've had the flu.

And there is a HepA shot. I had to look it up earlier in question to my P3 immunization list.

Its not law. You can get an exemption using moral, medical or religious reasons to not get shots.
