Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), a member of the House Republican leadership, offered criticism Thursday to those comparing Democratic leaders to Nazis in the healthcare debate.

“I think the purpose of the town halls is for people to be able to express their views in an orderly and respectful manner, and that needs to take place on both sides,” said McMorris Rodgers, the fifth-ranking Republican in the House.

“I certainly don’t condone violence, I don’t condone calling President Obama Hitler and painting swastikas on signs at town halls,” continued McMorris Rodgers, vice chairwoman of the GOP conference.

McMorris Rodgers is the first member of the House Republican leadership to decry the Nazi comparisons. It follows a week of attacks by the House Democrats’ campaign arm on House Republican leaders, who Democrats say should speak out against Rush Limbaugh’s remarks comparing Democrats to Nazis in the healthcare debate.

Nazi and other inflammatory comparisons are ugly, whether used by the left or right. This is a civil society - people should endeavor to be civil.

I think one can make legitimate comparisons and political satire, but some people take it too far. A satirical image of the sitting President as Hitler, although offensive, is what it is. It's when you get everyday citizens carrying signs with the image and believing that the image is truly accurate and not an exaggeration that they are taking it way too seriously and literally.

Pelosi started the Nazi talk with her remark about townhall protestors carrying swastikas.

Nevermind the Nazis=GOP stuff we've heard for years and few posters echoing that theme long before the townhall protests.

At least one of the Obama as Hitler posters was held by a Democrat planted in the crowd.

If this ends up being verifiable, the guy's a POS. I know there have been some Left Wingers who have said that the Democrats should fight fire with fire on the plants and if this is true, that means some of them have done so. They'll get nothing but condemnation from me though. It's indefensible no matter who is doing it.

The difference I haven't seen this part of the story on the mainstream news.

It's old tactic when a camera focuses in a small number of people and claiming it's a huge rally. They focus on some outrageous individuals because it's harder to relate to a crowd of faces.

From Steve's original link to the article at TheHill.com ... the view of Abraham Foxman / ADL:

The Anti-Defamation League last week condemned Limbaugh’s remarks and called those debating the healthcare issue to stop bringing Nazi imagery into the debate.

“Regardless of the political differences and the substantive differences in the debate over healthcare, the use of Nazi symbolism is outrageous, offensive and inappropriate,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL national director and a Holocaust survivor. “Americans should be able to disagree on the issues without coloring it with Nazi imagery and comparisons to Hitler. This is not where the debate should be at all.”

Well put.

Considering the yo-yos that think it is cute to satire the evils of communism (and the mass murders committed by them) by publicly joining lame groups such as Commies for Christ, I think there is little room to talk.

Only fools that have zero knowledge of history would throw down denunciations that callously with abandon or make jokes about it. I see way too many people comparing ants to elephants by throwing around the commie, fascist, and Nazi tags when it it inappropriate and offensive. It just trivializes the real victims of communism, fascism, and Nazi-ism.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

It's the ones who try to disrupt the Town Hall meetings by shouting and acting aggressive with the intent of purposely derailing the meeting that are the most troubling. As offensive as swastikas are, that is protected free speech, IMO. Acting unruly and disorderly conduct is NOT protected by the 1st Amendment.

Yes I agree that using the same words that the Socialists did for many years are wrong.

The connotation you imply with the term Socialist, is no less offensive than calling someone a Nazi. We're all socialists and we're all capitalists. Do you use the USPS? You're a socialist. Did your parents send you to a public school? Your parents are socialists. Now stop being such a dumbass and either educate yourself on what it actually means or shut the ** up about calling people Socialists.
