Perhaps a mans' rates would decline more than a woman if the policy holder and for reasons already given. Before I was married was chasing wild women, getting drunk, and driving like a maniac, after marriage, according to statistics, I was at home watching the garbage. My rates went down when I added my new then wife to my policy.

Another rate increase regardless if you have an excellent driving record is having a low credit score. Also a highly competitive business, not like heath care, I only stick with the top rated companies, and get several quotes. And you cannot believe those constant TV ads. I got my rates when I added my wife, practically instantly over the phone talking to my agent. These guys have got to be able to talk on the phone at the same time they are trying to dig up any dirt on you. Far more efficient than the USCIS.

You'd think that adding another driver to your policy would cost you more money, not less.

A bit counterintuitive.

ya, i never really got the logic behind that, especially by simply "listing" them...they arent even covering him.

By you having a spouse they think you will drive safer therefore - less accidents = cheaper policy.

The older you get the less you will pay for car insurance also.

Rates are very low out in rural areas where there aren't too many cars for a car to have an accident with. So even when he adds his son he will probably be paying less than Marilyn and I will

Insurance underwriters speculate that "married" people are less of a risk, in terms of DUI/DWI, late night driving and other risk factors for those that are single.

This "unwritten rule" applies more prominently to those under 30 years of age.

Ok, that makes much more sense. They count on the missus to keep her wayward husband in line

and away from sinful activities like drinking and driving.

and that they may have kids in the car.

Makes total sense.

I think they use your marital status to rate your policy anyway, even if the spouse is not a named driver. Anyway, it's as good a guess as any as to why adding a driver would bring your rate down. It could also be that the added driver has some characteristics which are lowering the rate despite the increased number of drivers. Progressive is known for using some pretty advanced algorithms for its rating structure.

I also have my insurance with Progressive and our annual premium went down almost $1000 at our most recent renewal. They revised something that worked in our favor.

Marilyn, look at the bright side. You don't have to live in Kansas.

I am not overly fond of living in LA but I do love all the stuff to do and see here...

I hear ya. I couldn't imagine living in a place where 'high cuisine' was Pizza Hut.

Gosh, maybe I need to change insurance companies. After I married, I called my insurance agent. I was told that Allstate would drop me for being married and my husband not having a US drivers license or social security number. I told him that my husband did not live here, but he said that Allstate would still drop me.:(

NEVER let ANY insurance company charge you a rate based on credit or even offer your SS number to them to give you a quote. If they can't go find someone who can. Progressive started basing the rates on credit instead of driving and accidents. Even if I get behind I have never had a ticket in years or gone without insurance because it's against the law. One has nothing to do with the other, because insurance always gets paid.
