Hey guys, not sure if there's much i can do about this, but am not quite sure if what the SS office are telling me is correct

I flew in the US in May, and applied for my social security card on 3rd June, we got married on 25th July but still hadn't received my card so last week (after all the madness of the wedding/visitors etc..) i went to my local office to chase it up. Turns out the application had been processed, a number had been awarded but no card sent out...there's a surprise..lol so while i was there thought i'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone and apply for the name change (to my new married name) i had my new marriage licence, passport, birth cert, but was told she couldn't do it as i didn't have my divorce document (silly me thinking obtaining a marriage licence then a certificate would be enough proof of this). So today with ALL documents on hand i go back again....this time i'm told they cannot change my name until i get my green card as my I-94 runs out in 6 days (even though i thought it invalid as i'm now married anyway) i have my social security number as the lady who i saw last week gave it to me, yet they still won't process the name change, or even send me a replacement card to the one i never got in the first place.......

Aaaaaaaaaaarggghhhh!

Any idea's anyone?

Thankies in advance

The number is all you need right now. It'll get you a bank account and something to fill in on any application that asks for a SSN. Nobody ever actually shows their card. Once you get the GC, then go sort it out. There's so many stories about different SS offices, but I wouldn't bother with it at this point because you've got the number and that's yours for life, no matter what your name changes to.

This is correct, they won't issue a card with less than 2 weeks remaining on the I-94. The I-94 doesn't become void once you marry, the visa becomes void once you enter the US, but the I-94 is valid until it expires. It is proof of your legal presence here. Once it expires, you will need the AOS receipt to show your current legal presence in the US.

Almost the same thing happened to us. My hubby's social security application went through manual verification (we went too soon to apply) and he was eventually approved and even issued a number (which we have on a printout from the office) but the card lost in the mail. We tried to go in to have it resent but his I-94 had just expired at that point, so they wouldn't process it. He has to go back with anything "current" from USCIS, like EAD or the GC It's frustrating as heck. Not even the AOS receipt was suffient enough for them

2009-08-12 no biometrics yet.......called on 30 day mark to report no biometrics, a service inquiry has been made on the case.....

I had to show it in North Carolina to get my Driver's Licence though - other than that, it's true, you won't need it :)

SS office is full of untrained individuals. They have to be re-trained for each K-1 and every woman that changes here name after marriage. They also have a department that re-invents the wheel daily. My wife had her CARD six days after arriving. Be that as it may...you have your number and that is what is important. The card could say "Santa Clause" and it wouldn't matter. No one ever asks for the CARD, they ask for the number. The SS card is not valid ID and is not valid for ID to verify you are eligible to work, not even for a citizen born here. We have to show a birth certificate or passport to verify work eligibility. I lost my SS CARD in 1973 and haven't bothered to replace it. 36 years and counting and no need for the CARD. When you get your green card you can return at your leisure and change the name. In the meantime, sit back and smile as the untrained SS staff prepares to be in charge of your medical care. Wooo Hooo!
