'Cloud ship' scheme to deflect the sun's rays is favourite to cut global warming

Ships with giant funnels which travel the world's seas creating more clouds to deflect the sun's rays could help cut global warming, say scientists

The "cloud ships" are favoured among a series of schemes aimed at altering the climate which have been weighed up by a leading think-tank.

The project, which is being worked on by rival US and UK scientists, would see 1,900 wind-powered ships ply the oceans sucking up seawater and spraying minuscule droplets of it out through tall funnels to create large white clouds.

It might.

The point would be to prevent further heat invasion. Likely as atmospheric degeneration continues (as with the O3 layer)... I've also hear of engineering the atmosphere with other particulate matter (Sulfur dioxide, etc). It would be easier NOT to put into the air excess emissions of all greenhouse gases that make water vapor intensify its greenhouse effect.

If we are having a hard time predicting what changes are coming I would think that tinkering with the atmosphere would be even harder to predict outcomes. You have to admit that the models haven't been very accurate, hence all the "tweaks" they must make to explain unexpected changes like the current cooling we are having. This seems like a very dangerous path to take.

You can actually 'shoot' it into the atmosphere too. As enough of these droplets condense, however... the saltwater would be too heavy and would fall down to earth. I think that these ships would likely shoot salt-less vapor into the atmosphere.

In order to make it cloud-forming, we're talking about shooting it up REALLY high up there. Not just dissipating it into the air. That could in effect get around the turning it into a greenhouse effector.

As per the weather cooling, I can't say. It might be a pattern of the climate shift, a pattern of weather variability by itself, a weather response to ongoing climate shifting, or the destabilization of weather due to the shift. Or all of the above. Modeling that is a bit tricky.

I agree that messing around is a bit dangerous. Not just because of the unknown scientific factors behind the phenomena, but because of the political implications involved.

I know. New data means the model must be changed to reflect that. Throw in a purposeful intervention and all bets are off.
