California public union OKs strike authorization

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's largest state employees' union voted on Saturday to approve a strike authorization measure to protest furloughs of state workers and pressure state officials to ratify its labor contract. A spokesman for Service Employees International Union Local 1000 said a strike was not imminent but that the vote authorized union officers to initiate certain job actions, including a strike if necessary.

The SEIU represents about 95,000 state employees, including clerical workers and teachers.

The group's labor contract with the state expired last year, SEIU spokesman Jim Zamora said. The union negotiated a new deal with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's administration in February, but the contract has not been ratified by the state Legislature.

Earlier this week, the Republican governor signed a bill that closed a more than $24 billion budget gap. Under the legislation, furloughs will continue for state workers for three days a month, cutting their pay by 15 percent.

"We feel that he (Schwarzenegger) really undermined any kind of a contract deal by pushing these furloughs on folks," Zamora said.

The SEIU said the strike authorization was approved by 74 percent of its membership.

There are people who say that even after this deal we will still likely be in a deficit. This strike could be just what we need to build up our surplus.

There might still be a deficit but I think this is a reasonable way to go about fixing the problem and these people need to realize were in a recession and sacrifices need to be made. It seems a major strike like that would cause even more problems but hell if it was able to give California a surplus I would be one happy camper.

Ontario, Canada's had 2 strikes.

Toronto garbage strike and the VIA rail train strike.

LCBO almost went on strike as well.

I wonder if they purposely plan it for summer.

A strike can only be a good thing?.. think about it free time off! God I think if we tried to form a union where I work we'd be hung, drawn and quartered then fired :P A union can be a very good and positive thing.. it can equally be a big greedy wasteful thing as well.

With the USA importing tens of thousands of legal immigrants every month, rampant illegal immigration too, a recession, mass unemployment nationwide, etc. What kind of bargaining power do these morons think they have? Idiots!!!! Idiots indeed!!!

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Tell that to CA's state workers...they get benefits unavailable to most people in the private sector, and at least they are still employed, unlike many who aren't paid with tax money.

I am starting to thing Glen Beck is right.

"While the media fawns at another "barrier" being broken, more important stories are being missed. And yes, the media stinks on ice, but this time it's not necessarily all their fault. Here's the one thing: The president is pulling a page from the community organizing playbook and he's overwhelming the system."

Actually, Bill Clinton signed the bill into law that eased lending laws, so more people could be home owners (whether they could afford to or not).
