Could you imagine the PC outrage if an airline CEO were to make such a statement in the U.S.!??

Aeroflot Makeover to Include A ‘Very Striking’ Cabin Crew

29 July 2009

By Ira Iosebashvili / The Moscow Times

Aeroflot personnel have received special training in customer service, and the company’s flight attendants will be “eye-catching girls” that will not exceed a size 48, new CEO Vitaly Savelyev told reporters at a news conference, where he detailed changes at the state airline.

The Russian size 48 is equivalent to a U.S. measurement of 12 to 14. The flight attendants will be outfitted in uniforms chosen after consultations with a London sociologist, Savelyev said Sunday.

“A sociologist told us that, unfortunately, the color of our old uniforms was a repulsive color, that it made passengers nervous,” Savelyev said, adding that the new uniforms would be scarlet, beige and navy blue.

Flight attendants — presumably female — will have to comply with height and weight regulations, not exceeding 160 centimeters in height and a size 48, Savelyev said. “These will be very eye-catching, very striking girls,” he said.

girls bigger than a 12 or 14 probably can't maneuver too well down narrow aisles anyway

Stupid way to run a business. I'm a guy, I like pretty women and I like pretty flight attendants. But this is just sheer stupidity, rooted in 1960's thinking. If I were a shareholder, I would be worried about how many other outdated notions he's running my airline on. It's nice to look at a pretty face, but i'd rather the focus be on flight attendants who can save lives in an emergency.

I dont care what the flight attendants look like, I have an idea if you want to make your customers happier give them more room to stretch out on 11 hour flights. Ask the flight attendants to watch as they push the cart down the aisle to not break my arm which is not hanging over the arm rest. And if you cant get a plane somewhere on time do something nice for the customers you screwed over.

I'm going to go ahead and call bullshit on this because we all know part of the feminist movement was women can be attractive AND smart. Are you disagreeing with that you woman-hating pig?

Maybe Aeroflot is looking to attract more international flyers and save money at the same time. Smaller, more fit and attractive stewardesses will save money in fuel (less weight) and increase passenger numbers. When I fly domestically is am hit more often by a stewardess body than by the cart. But, I agree that increasing the size of seats and leg room would attract a lot more people on the long flights.

Besides, everyone knows that woman's lib never made it to the FSU. The women there were already equal.

Every 5 or 6 years airlines change, update the flight attendants uniforms. Delta just updated their flight attendant uniforms. The size 12/14 remark is actually a safety issue. ALL airlines have a height / weight requirements for the flight attendants. Additionally the flight attendant needs to be able to lift a certain amount of weight. It all has to deal with being able to get passengers out of the plane as fast as possible.

The CEO is brilliant in my regard. Why not take a normal business activity like new uniforms and put some punch behind it. Ya business travelers you will have some "eye candy" on your flight. He gets a bunch of free advertising in the national, world papers. When in reality it really is business as usual.

Yeah, but what service does "eye candy" really provide the passenger? They're not going to sleep with you, or even sit down and have a drink with you. What with the seats getting smaller and more cramped, an erection probably isn't even possible when she bends over to serve what passes for food on an Aeroflot flight.

The cost-savings argument isn't really valid, given that we're talking about passenger jets here. The difference between a 90 lb flight attendant and a 130 lb flight attendant is about the difference between a single passenger carrying a suitcase or not. The savings isn't even a blip on the corporate spreadsheet.

Give me a flight attendant who knows what the hell she's doing any day of the week. My experience has been that the eye-candy flight attendants are much less customer service oriented than the older, less attractive but more experienced flight attendants. My guess too is that the ones who are less worried about their physical appearance have probably put in more time learning how to save my butt in an emergency than the one who can't stop checking her makeup in a compact mirror. And as I said, if the guy in charge is focused on silliness like this, I'd be worried about how he's running the rest of the company.

Glad they're changing the uniforms though. I agree, they're awful.

Imaging. Same reason Disney employees can't have beards.

I would be afraid if the Flight Attendant only weighed 90lbs. I don't think they would be able to lift the emergency door.

The cost savings could be there. Let's do some friendly math.

There are some assumptions here....

Aeroflot currently has a fleet of 99 planes with 3 passenger subsidiaries.

Average weight of a passenger is 180 lbs,

Average amount of fuel used per passenger per flight is 132 lbs. Using Aeroflot's average stage length of 2000KM.

132 lbs / 180 lbs is 0.73333 pounds of JP/4.

0.7333 / average density of JP/4 6.4 = 0.11458333 US gals per pound per flight

If you save 30 LBS per flight attendant THEN.......

0.11458333 * 30 = 3.4375 US gals saved per flight attendant per flight

Current spot rate of JP/4 pegged against heating oil $1.89 * 3.4375 = $6.50 money saved per flight attendant per flight

Average number of flight attendants per flight 3 * $6.50 = $19.50 saved per flight

# of flights per day 550 * $19.50 = $10,725 saved per day

flight days per year 360 * $10,725 = $3,861,000 money saved per year.

$3.8 million in savings per year...is more than a blip on anyone's Income Statement.

The savings isn't even a blip on the corporate spreadsheet.

Do you think the CEO came up with it...or was it some marketing drone?? I am betting on the marketing drone.

I know I used weight in my own example, but I don't think the emphasis is on weight per se (I've not seen a whole lot of working age Russian women who are overweight) as it is physical attractiveness. And while I've known some faces that can stop a Mack truck, I have to admit they probably don't weigh any more than the pretty ones.
