Yep. Power corrupts and some cops (not all) are on a big power trip. In their mind, you're suppose to respect their authority....and they have absolutely no people skills. They probably kick their dog when they get home and feed him gun powder.

Circumstances can also be used be certain individuals to their advantage. For all we know, this guy could have deliberately antagonized the cops so that they arrest him, As a result, he makes a point built on false pretenses. How many people heard of him prior to this? This is America. People will do anything for 15 minutes of fame.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

not everyone has that type of relationship with their neighbors.

Especially not here in the Boston area, I'd have to say.

maybe boston ain't that great, eh?

Depends on what you like. I don't really care to know my neighbors. Nosy bastards would probably call the cops on me.

don't sound too friendly there in any event.

It's not for everybody, especially those not raised here. For me it's normal. I have friends to be friendly with. I don't really care to make small talk with strangers, call it what you like.

I'd be glad to not have you move here since you wouldn't like it. :D

so you're not friends with your neighbors?

and it's a given i wouldn't like it - too crowded.

 Who do I look like, Mr. Rogers?

Some people are friends with their neighbors, but Boston is kind of known for that. It's definitely not like living in the south (the only comparison I have). People are very private here and do not open up. In fact, I used to live in Cambridge, probably not far from Gates, not that I would have known it.

They are all on the internet chatting to people they have never met and are hundreds and thousands of miles away and they call these people friends. Does this "feel" familiar?

Far too many cops have this notion that the public, even the law-abiding public, are there to be pushed around.

Lot of knee-jerk cop haters in this country, too. If you had work in a job where you had to carry a gun into unknown situations and usually dealing with suspects, criminals and victims, you'd have a different view, too. Cops meet the worst people around and become really cynical because people lie to them on a daily basis.

Funny how many people assume are supposed to understand what's happening the moment they arrive on scene. It's not TV.

I daresay, Alien, that had you been on the wrong side of police abuse and intimidation, as I was earlier this summer, you would yell with outrage and sing a rather different tune. But you live a more blessed life.

Had he cooperated like a good citizen, this would not be news.

My wife and I did cooperate when it was our turn. Police were completely uninterested in investigating the origin of the problem around us (it was our neighbor, yelling at a sports game that went wrong) and abused and intimdated us for over an hour.

As I've said elsewhere, I've learned there are two occasions to be afraid of the police: when you've done something wrong and when you haven't.

My first mistake was my cooperative action in stepping out of my house when commanded to by a cop who had no grounds for harassing us but, in his ignorance, choose to focus his attentions on us.

We're not famous, so our abuse isn't news. The fact that police abuse is so common should be news that should outrage us all.

My guess is this incident lies somewhere in the middle, with the officer truly feeling he was provoked into the arrest, and from a police perspective rightly so.

The homeowner of course feels the opposite, and felt comfortable being a horses*** to the officer to the point of getting arrested, but felt that since it was his home, he was free to be a horses***. From his perspective as a rightful homeowner, he feels wronged, and perhaps to a degree that is also correct.

In all my years of working with police officers, it pays to remember that you won't be cussing them out of doing their jobs. They have tremendous leeway on the scene to warn, to cite, and if they feel necessary arrest. Being obnoxious most often bypasses their willingness to take the warning route. That leaves options b and c.

At the end of the day, is this guy suggesting that he was solely arrested because of his skin color? Because if these are the types of individuals that Harvard is employing, you have to question the university.

Or does this show that in 2009 America, if you are a minority and refuse to obey an officers instructions, you can cray racism to get your way.

So where does it stop? Does a minority also get to cry racism if they don't get a job promotion and so on?

I'm gonna guess you have no idea what Life Alien has led.

I've had and seen my share of run-ins with cops. I have seen unprovoked Police brutality.. and provoked police brutality :)

I have seen cops lie in court but I have also seen them tell the truth when lying would have worked.

I was ready to believe this cop had a chip on his shoulder and so did the Professor and the two clashed.

AS we now know there were more than just these two present at the scene.

We also know this was more about a Professor who has spent his whole life teaching and learning about "racism in America" .....and this is the closest thing he has actually seen of it.

......A cop checking to make sure his house was not robbed again.

The professor was an elitist ####### and he was arrested for it. Nothing else to it. It had nothing to do with him being black. It does say something about his character for making out to be a racial issue. He is the one who should apologize to the cop.
