So the one thing I've never understood with regards to recent bills in congress is the argument "it will never work here"

With regards to the vacation bill that was up this spring and the recent healthcare bill which looks to force employers to give healthcare (100+ employees)(By the way the vacation bill called for a minimum level of vacation for all employees...I think it called for one week) supporters say it works successfully in other countries. Then the opponents chime in and say it won't work in the US, that having a forced week of holiday for instance will damage the economy.

Why is the US different then? Is it that our businesses are inferior and need that extra few weeks a year to stay alive??

Those who argue against such proposals, argue under the presumption that the Federal Government or government in general can do nothing right. They believe the government should stay out of such business matters and instead focus on what you do in your bedroom.

Usually when the other countries did force companies to pay for vacations it caused many smaller companies to have to fire workers and some to even fold and then you have less competition.

Also if anyone remembers in the Socialist countries(Which the USA is becoming) when it was mandated to have workers work 32 hours a week and pay them for 40 did the same thing. The Socialists really did think that since workers would be working fewer days that it would force employers to hire more workers and then lower the high unemployment. The opposite happened.

When the government steps in and mandates anything it is usually crushing for most small businesses. Small businesses actually hire the most people in this country. The profit margins are thin and when the profits disappear then people have to be let go. Sure it is easy to say to just raise prices and all but the people that buy products and services tend to then cut back and then the same things happen.

Now I know you are all wetting yourselves over Obama the Socialist and all but we are a strong country here in that we can compete with anyone anywhere in products and services because we don't mandate and the government keeps their hands off to assure that people are working. Europe is very happy that they will now be able to finally compete more evenly with the U.S. and without having to fire a shot.

The difference is once the government mandates paid vacation days the costs are passed on to consumers or taxpayers and if vacation is that important, look for a job with that benefit.

The other richer nations are tiny states that are financial centers or are oil exporters. Even Western European countries have declining populations and restrict immigration and structurally high unemployment so these things wouldn't work well here. Obama's accelerating the socialism in America with high and reduced hours unemployment in exchange for health care benefits.

You really are clueless about business and/or economics huh? The figure you threw out before about the 100 plus is wrong. It was 50 plus. Also even if it was 50 plus only businesses then that means they will lay offs more people than smaller companies. Even more so if they now have to compete unfairly with a smaller business that did not just get hit with a huge unfair tax. (And a tax it is)

Also we all know when any government meddling HAS ever happened in the past it only means that it will BECOME broader and eventually include smaller businesses. Now since you seem so in love with Obama the Socialist and Socialism then what happens when all of sudden a lot of layoffs happen and then these consumers have no money to spend on goods and services. And also that small businesses make up the largest workforce and they all of a sudden have no customers? That is right they will have to lay off too and many have to close up shop.

Right the estimates are starting to come in that all this new Socialism is going to cost many jobs and at a time when we are having huge unemployment going on. We have seen this before though and historically always have. The great depression was deepened and extended by the Socialism that Roosevelt tried. The only thing that brought us out of that was a great war.
