Hello,

If anyone has any information, tips, websites, etc regarding "work from home"...please let me know! I plan to continue to stay at home with my 1 y.o. daughter, but need to add some extra income to our household!

PS: I have a bachelor degree. I speak Arabic, French, English and have 5 years experience as an administrative assistant.

Please take great caution and research anyone wanting you to work from home.. this is a major area of fraud and scamming today... there are legitimate jobs out there but they are not easy to find given todays economy... I wish I could point you in a direction but I can't.. I can only say be careful down this path...

I've been looking at some work from home stuff too mostly I just find #######, I wish there was a way to weed out the scams and just find the real stuff. I'm a stay at home mom of 4 although I really don't have to be, they are home schooled so working from home would be nice. But I could venture out and work since they are old enough to be left home and will do their work. I just prefer being home.

Not sure if it's ok to post this, as I certainly don't want to violate TOS...but if anyone has good typing skills, you may want to investigate Medical Transcribers. I may seriously look into it once I know I can legally take a course. Apparently, there is quite the call for it.

Translating documents?

Try contacting your local school board & see if they need an interpreter / translator. My school district has a high immigrant population and we are always looking for interpreters & for certain school documents / paperwork to get translated.

Also, one of the other ESOL teachers in my department is from Senegal & he does a lot of translating documents (in the private sector) into Arabic or French as these are his other languages.

You should look at companies within the Localization industry as they are always looking for freelance linguists. Most localization companies have a 'Register with us" type of link where you can send in your resume/CV and they'll send you documents, websites, software and online help files to translate where their company project managers and engineers will fully support you should you have any questions.

You are not expected to have technical knowledge of the files you work with, such as how a website works or how online help files are compiled. Although knowledge of translation tools such as Trados TagEditor and Workbench or Idiom WorldServer would be very beneficial.

Examples of those companies are: www.sdl.com, www.vistatec.ie, www.welocalize.com, www.luz.com, www.lionbridge.com, www.simultrans.com, www.transperfect.com, www.acclaro.com and www.tektrans.com.

Since you speak those languages, it would be a very good idea that you try translating. I started looking at that option myself since I could not any jobs and worked for only 5 weeks in 8 months. In my home country, I worked as a translator/interpreter. A week ago, I contacted one of the local universities, to be more precise a department that among the rest deal with my language. They said they had a list of translators, and I asked them if they could put me on their list. You really have to be careful with "work-at-home, earn-500$-a-day" type of jobs as they are all scam.

Check with local hospitals as well. It is often they need translators and most of the time it is a three way call. My aunt works from home teaching English to French students online. I am sorry I don't have more information regarding that, but she doesn't even speak French, lol

Note that depending on the type of localization it typically requires native speakers.

I am sure that as with most things there will be exceptions to the rule but having a language as a second learned language isn't the norm.

I dealt with localization companies back in Ireland for several years but things may be different here in the US. Ireland was then pretty much the localization epicenter!
