"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

Obama's approval numbers are something like 58-59% in the last poll I saw (about 2 weeks ago). The strongly approve/ disapprove numbers really don't mean anything these days due to the extreme polarization of the parties. Essentially no matter what Obama does there are hard core Republicans (20-30%) who will say he sucks & hardcore Democrats (20-30%) who say he walks on water.

Bush's numbers were above 50% at the beginning of his first term as well & we all know how that turned out. As I have said many times it's still too early to tell how effective Obama's policies will be. What really matters is what shape the country will be in 2012 (assuming the Mayans were wrong & the world doesn't end then :P ).

Rasmussen Reports is a little more nuanced, and tracks a little closer to the bone. Rasmussen's track record is such that his numbers have hit the mark better than anyone else the last few general elections.

A Fordham University analysis ranked Rasmussen Reports as the most accurate national polling firm in Election 2008.[6]

Reports by Slate Magazine and The Wall Street Journal found that Rasmussen Reports was one of the most accurate polling firms for the 2004 United States presidential election and 2006 United States general elections. [7][8]

Rasmussen Reports conducted the polls featured on the CBS game show Power of 10.
