I know you have to go to the local SSN office once you are naturalized and they change your status from permanent resident to citizen. I know they encourage you to do this right away. I read somewhere on this forum that someone went to their local office and they said to come back as it wasn't in the system yet. My question is, how long does this take; i.e., after the swearing-in ceremony, how long should you wait before you go to the SSN office?

Just as a side note, my local office is absolutely horrible (and far away). When my SSN came after I got my 2 year card, my name was spelled wrong. The "customer service rep" that served me at the SSN office actually said to me (I swear I'm not lying), 'I could probably get this changed but it's probably easier if you make all the phone calls'. She literally made me do her job! I think if I hadn't, I'd still be waiting for the corrected card!

Dmaddox74--btw, obviously you are an SSA employee who is helpful. I hope you understand that I wasn't implying that all SSA employees (or other government workers) are dimwits. Just the ones I get to deal with!

I only ran into one idiot at our SS office, everyone else has been nice and helpful, just request to speak to someone that is nice and knows their job.

Yeah, I agree.

My focus was to help those who are citizenship process. I worked the SSA booth at 2 naturalization ceremonies so I wanted to offer my help here since I'm also in the same situation.

I would go down to your local office, you quite possibly will have to apply again.

There's a place to change your name on the Citizenship application(I was always told that's the best time). That's what I did for my wife. Don't forget to change it with your local SSA office after your ceremony. They'll always have you as a Perm Res. until you do.

In that stage with the I-130/I-485, you can apply at the same time for a I-675 where an EAD photo card will be issued to get a probationary SS card. She will need her marriage certificate is her last name is changing to yours, and her foreign passport as a photo ID. Suggest you do this in person at an SS office, wouldn't want any of these lost in the mail. After your interview, and married less than two years, she will get a conditional PR card that means another trip to the SS office to get rid of that probationary card, her SS number should remain the same. Over two years of marriage, a ten year PR card, but same as the conditional as far as SS is concerned. Last and third visit to the SS office will be the change to USC status. I only typed out one SS-5 with Acrobat and made changes to it saving each change with three visits to the SS office.

Since my wife works in town and our SS office is 37 miles away and on my way to work, I bring in her signed application and her ID's, did the same for my step-daughter, first two times went fine. Last time for USC, had an idiot tell me my wife had to come in person, called him an idiot, I don't put up with that #######. Told him his crazy office is taking over 15% of my wife's paycheck between her and her employer that she may never get back, and it's not like we came there to get money, but just to get credit for what he is taking from us. I hate people like that, felt like taking him out to the parking lot and pounding the living ####### out of him. But his supervisor came along and corrected him.

:blush:I'm sorry to hear about your experience. To answer your question, all we need to see is your certificate and state ID to change your status. Find out if SSA is represented at the Ceremony to view your information.
