Hey I was just wondering if anyone knew the divorce rates amongst people who have gone through this whole process. I am not even sure if this is tracked by anyone, but to me it would seem that the rate would be REALLY low given what people here have to go through just for the privilege to get married.

I know in the USA you have a slightly better chance winning a coin toss than staying married. To a foreign national dunno....working on it

This thread strayed a bit, but we were talking about this just the other day:

For me...knowing the statistics would be more entertaining than useful. Even if statistics bore out that 99% of international marriages failed...I would think that ours' would be the 1% that succeeded. I'm sure most that go into this process would think along the same lines.

So I think that for most couples it wouldn't change their plans one way or another.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

I think I remember reading somewhere (here, but quite a while ago) that the stats are slightly lower for couples where one is an immigrant.

I read some of that other thread mentioned above, too. While there may be common challenges shared by immigrants from certain regions, each situation is so different that I really don't think it's realistic/fair/helpful to overlay stereotypic generalizations onto any given relationship. Jeez, even people in the same family can be pretty darn different and uncompatible...

My husband's culture is very different from mine in many ways (he's Asian), but we just celebrate the good things about both cultures and focus on the positive and communicate as much as possible. And we are very respectful of one another. I smile when I read about "big cultural differences" between USC's from different parts of the country, or between USC's and Europeans. Everything's relative. Mutual respect, common values and interests, communication, and balance are more important to the success of the relationship, imho, than most of the trappings we call culture. I will say this, though: part of respect, I think, involves learning something about your partner's cultural background and doing your best to show respect for it in a way that they can recognize and appreciate.

I am happy to say that this marriage is off to a far better start than my first one (wherin I lived with, married, and then divorced a very UNrespectful).

Just my two rupees...

I'm an American man and I'm offended! :crying:

I'll probably toss and turn and lose 15 seconds of sleep tonight thinking about it.
