California drivers license renewal

Hi Everyone,

My wife received a letter from DMV in California to show proof of residence to renew her drivers license. She was given a 1 yr "temporary" license last May.

We provided a copy of her green card, and still have not heard back from DMV with the "ok" to renew.

Has this happened to anyone else, and can we go to our local DMV office to renew without their reply?

her license expires in 3 weeks..

Off course, you should visit the local DMV for your concern.

Carry passport, current driving license, letter in her name either any bill or bank statement or any official letter to prove her residency, social security card, personal check/ credit card (to pay fee). You may not need to present all document there but better to carry these.

We had to renew the wife's ID card the same way. It takes up to 8 weeks for the new license to be issued. It took us 6 weeks before the new California ID card showed up in the mail. The new license will expire when the conditional green card does.

The green card even the passport are not proofs of residence but rather proofs of identity and proof of US eligibility to reside and work in the case of a green card. Billing statements from credit cards utilities would be acceptible. Also the SSN card is ok. If the prior are not available, mail addressed to the renewee would be fine. If it's not mail something to the renewee. That's how I did it.

not always the case... my conditional card expired in 2007 but my DL doesn't expire until 2010, I think... and I got my DL before my conditional card expired

Same thing happened to me. I had mailed them a copy of my green card, but never got my Driver's License in the mail. I finally went to the DMV office, showed them my green card, paid the fee, had my picture taken and got my temporary license. My Driver's License arrived in the mail in about 4 weeks.

Hi Scott, what did you end up doing? We are in Cali and my wife's DL expires in a week. We mailed Sacramento the info needed a few weeks ago and heard nothing. I think we will go the DMV office now. Any help would be appreciated.

When it comes to Driver License issues (it's a Driver License, by the way, not a Driver's License. It's a Person's Driver License, or even a Driver's Driver License, but when it comes to naming the document, it's a Driver License: look it up), the best way is to go the DMV in person. Bring your current Driver License and your Green Card and you'll be fine. No passport needed, as the Green Card is a Federal photo ID, which is as good as it gets. Nothing trumps a Federal ID, not even a foreign passport.

I know that he has to take the driving test as well since he has a foreign DL, but will they issue him a permit or does he just wait until we can schedule the driving test? Can they be done at the same time? I have not been able to get ahold of anyone at the DMV, and the website does not address this that I can tell. Anyone who has been through the process in CA? Hi Menina.

Once your husband pass the written exam, DMV will issue him a permit.

A permit only allows him to practice driving with a person which has a valid CA License.

The permit is good for 1 year.

Also, after passing the written exam, you can now schedule him for behind the wheel test.

California is not honoring any foreign DL when you are already a resident of the state.

I also have a foreign DL before, which I use to drive here when I was still a tourist.

Since becoming a permanent resident, they don't honor my foreign license anymore.

Well, I already give you the process. It is up to you if you are going to follow it or not.

Yes, of course we are going to follow the process correctly. He has not driven at all since arriving here. My confusion was whether or not he would have to receive a permit or if he could do his written and driving test in the same day. I grew up in CA (US citizen) and I had to take a written test for my permit, wait 6 months while I practiced driving, and then do the driving test. I didn't know if the process would be the same for someone who already has a license where he has to get a permit first and then wait to take the driving test. From talking with other people, it sounds like once he passes the written test and gets put on my insurance, he can take the driving test as soon as an appointment is available. Also, wanted to notify all of my Brazilian friends that in CA the written test is available in Portuguese, so you do have that option if you want it.
