California is broke beyond belief and has been for a long time.

If they didn't have to pay so much into the Federal treasury and get so little back in return (it mostly goes to red states, as you know), would they still be broke?

Absolutely broke either way. They have a 42 billion dollar deficit for this year that they can't figure out how to solve. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl...icle5327474.ece

If they went their own way, they'd run out of electricity during the summertime. They refuse to build any new electricity generation plants. NIMBY has taken them over. They don't want dirty electricity but they don't want clean either. Even in San Francisco, there are complaints about the idea of putting tidal power generated electricity out in the bay.

I love the way they run things in NH. I would move there in a heartbeat if my job didn't keep me where I was. It is good to see that there are some real freedom loving people left in this country.

These people that are calling for secession from that Union are not true patriots no matter what they claim to be. They're Republican partisan hacks. Both the Republican and the Democratic party have facilitated this phenomena of the federal government overstepping their bounds relative to the states.

There are many things that the federal government is good for, but the federal government is getting involved in minuscule things and imposing its will over things it should not be getting involved in. The federal government should be providing for all issues related to defense and trade. No question there. There are certain domestic human rights issues, like the right for gays to enjoy the same legal rights as everyone else and the right for blacks to be fully enfranchised that the federal government should intervene in. But really, there aren't a ton of other issues.

The federal government should not be holding states hostage for highway funding by making them enact nanny-state seatbelt laws. This is preposterous. States should be putting together their own welfare systems if that is what they wish to do. There are parts of the United States where people don't mind taxes and love the nanny-state idea, that is fine, the state governments can tax those people all they want. Otherwise, get out of my checkbook and get off my lawn.

LOL. Too bad last I checked unemployment was 10% in this state, a significant region of it has 15-18% unemployment. Let's not even bother with the U6 figures. Our unemployment fund is pretty much bankrupt. Sure, it can play that game, but it'll lose.

Just suppose for one moment that any of these secession bids actually went ahead, how would a seceded state interact with the rest of the US? Would they set up borders and border patrols (not cheap), would they have to have a standing army? (not cheap) would they have to maintain their own infrastructure (I presume most interstate highways are subsidised by the federal gov?). Would they impose an import/export tax? (potentially very dodgy). Have these people in fact thought this through to a logical conclusion - that it might be cheaper to stay within the Federation?

why worry about it when there's the un?

Bullsh!t. It's about losing power to a Black man. Plain and Simple.

If this really becomes a serious possibility and the USA goes the way of the USSR, then states already have their own troops called National Guard. The state pays their salaries, and provides the training facilities and armories. The feds provide their toys.

What a silly question. Did Germany set up borders and border patrols with Holland and Austria?

US states can coexist as individual countries, just like EU states coexist within the European Union.

so you're saying the un won't recognize any of the states if they did so?

:secret: and awfully funny how you couldn't call the racism ploy irrelevant ;)
