I received an RFE today. They are asking for my original marriage certificate in Arabic. I didn't realize they wanted that with the translation. Am I the only one who didn't realize that??? So now, do I send them my ORIGINAL copy of my marriage certificate or do I send them a copy?? And, does anyone know how long this will delay my case if I send it back asap???

Thanks!!!!

OH Betsy I am SO SORRY about this!!!

Yes they do need both a copy of the original and the translation. DON'T send the original, you won't get it back!!!! What I did was make a color copy of of my marriage certificate and then took both the original and the copy to the bank and had them put a statement on the copy (on the back side) that said:

State of __________

County of __________

I certify that this is a true and correct copy of a document inthe possession of full legal name as of this date.

Dated: _______

Signature of notary

typed name of notary

My appointment expires on __________ and the their stamp

I did this with EVERY SINGLE copy of original and had 5 copies of each. For the originals I submitted to them (ie the affidavit letters) I have 5 copies all with the above statement on them. One set went to SO, one set is my backup and 3 extra sets of backups in case someone loses something!!

Well I went today and made a copy of the original and sent everything back by priority mail so I can track it and make sure it arrives. Does anyone have any idea how much delay this will cause in our case??

Usually not much of a delay - week/two maybe (depending, in part, how long it took you to respond). But not to worry - you don't go to the bottom of the list again...

i think originals are kept at the uscis so send copies as specified in the i130 instructions, just copy all pages of the authenticated contract(arabic/english/embassy seal)

Do you HAVE to have the embassy seal? Cause we didn't get that done at the American Embassy before I left. YIKES!!

If you are sending USCIS a copy is fine. Now, when you send your ds-230 to NVC, you need to send original and a copy together.

USCIS and NVC are two different places. NVC will send your originals and copies together with your package to the US embassy. At the end of your interview, you ask for your original documents back, and they will give them to you.

USCIS WILL NOT RETURN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS.

I would never send an original document unless they specifically asked for one. I got an RFE regarding my husband's divorce papers... I sent a copy of the original, and I sent a copy of the English translation but the RFE just said it was not acceptable.. I was totally puzzled... couldn't figure out what they wanted...

I got to looking at the two documents and I could see that not every single word had been translated... and the words writting on the stamps had not been translated... Took it to a friend who reads and writes arabic and she confirmed this. The "Professional" translator in Egypt who did our translations hadn't translated the document VERBATIM. My husband tried to get him to correct it so he could resend and the guy did make some changes, but STILL didn't translate it VERBATIM... So I had my friend here do an addendum to the translation from Egypt indicating she had read everything on the original, on his translation, and found the following items still needed translation... and she made the list... We then put the required paragraph about her ability to translate Arabic to English, and I put it all together with a cover letter and sent it back...

It took about a month or 6 weeks for them to notify me that the RFE had been "satisfied" and that case processing was resuming. My application was approved about another 2-4 weeks later.

It just made me crazy that they didn't tell me WHY the documents were not acceptable... and when I phoned the number on the RFE letter, they couldn't tell me what the exact problem was either... Glad I figured it out!

Good luck!

I received a similar RFE (although they actually had what they asked me for). They received the requested information from us on March 17 and approved our I-130 on April 6. So, it was about 3 weeks before our case was finished after the RFE was responded to.
