I've been having trouble and trouble and trouble getting SSN. it's been 2 months i got my EAD in my hands, but SS offcie just keep saying they can't issue me a number coz' they need a verification from DHS, and looks like that verification will never come.

What can I do about this? i really need to get the SSN by april 15 coz' my husband need to file tax with me as his dependent which we need it as a proof of relationship. since i've been here we've never had documents with both our names as relationship proof at all coz' I have problem with SSN.

can we walk-in to USCIS and get that EAD verification in writing or something like that by ourself? there's no infopass date avilable before the 15th at all.

Anyone in here ever walked-in to USCIS? please share your experience please..............

May as well file the IRS W 7 as I doubt if you would get the SSN in time anyway.

I had the same problem and called my local USCIS office and had them call SSA. Hard to get the number tho. Can be done as they do have phones!!!

Have you tried going to another SSA office and trying there?

What exactly does the SSA say they mean by verification from DHhS? The EAD card in your hand should be sufficient as per the Social Security Administration:

Please see below from the SSA website:

1. General - Evidence of Employment AuthorizationEmployment authorization for nonimmigrants can be determined by:

...

the DHS-issued Employment Authorization Document (EAD), either Form I-766 or I-688B.

The documents listed above are the only documents which FOs may accept as evidence of employment authorization.

NOTE: In some situations, the alien was issued an I-94 when admitted to the U.S. Later, applied for another immigration benefit and DHS issued the alien an EAD card. The alien may apply for an SSN card after the I-94 expired. If the alien shows a currently valid EAD, this is acceptable proof of authorization to work. In this situation, do not consider the expired I-94 when making a decision about alien status/work authorization; consider only the current immigration document (the EAD card).

Look through this document, print it out, and go to another SSA office w/ this print-out and your EAD card....and try again.

What can I do about this? i really need to get the SSN by april 15 coz' my husband need to file tax with me as his dependent which we need it as a proof of relationship. since i've been here we've never had documents with both our names as relationship proof at all coz' I have problem with SSN.

Unfortunately, you're posting this problem on April 11th, and it may not be enough time for your SS card to arrive in time for the April 15th tax filing. It can take 1-2 weeks for the actual card to arrive in the mail after your application is approved.

can we walk-in to USCIS and get that EAD verification in writing or something like that by ourself? there's no infopass date avilable before the 15th at all.

You can get an INFOPass apointment with your local USCIS office, but I'm not sure how that will help you with the Social Security....

thank you so much for your reply, Haole and Minya's wife

i don't really understand excatly what they mean by "Verification", it sounds like they want to make sure it's not fake or something like that which i think is very stupid, i mean, who would have a gut to fake the EAD?

I've been to 2 SSAmoffices already, one in Lansing and one in Ann Arbor, i'm in Michigan.

They said, all they need is just this "verification reply" from the DHS and then they can issue me the SSN on the same day, only that i won't have the card yet but i can recieve the number right away. so technically if i can make it in time if i get the SSN by wednesday morning as my husband doesn't have to file IRS W 7. Do i really need this verification or they're just don't know what they're really doing?

Haole please advise me how to get them speak on the phone with USCIS.

1. Which section of your USCIS local office did talk to?

2. What excatly did you explain to USCIS and how did you convince them the talk with the SSA?

Please help :(

hey darika

i had the same problem and the only thing u can do is wait..i called USCI i showed up weekly in the SSN office...the USCI hotline couldnt help me either so dont waste ur time in hanging in the holding line lol

ask thessn office if they can print it out and send it manuell..that what they did in my case when after 4 weeks no response come...

not verified means that USCI not updated ur account..so SSN office suspect the EAd could be a fake..thats why they have to wait until USCI put ur dates online...

so ask them to send it manuell and u will have it in 2 weeks..

dont walk into USCI..if u have no appoitment they will not let u in the building..

good luck

Go to the SS website. Download information regarding K-1 visas then go back the SS office and ask for a supervisor, you should get an SSN right away and stop this nonsense caused by ignorant, untrained government clerks that make up rules when they don't know the answer. Don't leave unti you get your application in and card on the way.

Belay my last. I just saw you are "AOS pending" If the I-94 is expired you are out of luck until you get the AOS.

I say, pick them up at the airport, and drive straight to the SS office for the SSN. Thi sis nonsense to now be stuck when you could have had her card on day one.

Thank you so much everyone for every kind replies.

and yes, my I-94 is already expired and my case status online for the EAD always shows "Case Recieved and Pending" even i already got EAD with me. I did an Infopass last month and USCIS said they will update and fix it for me, now it's been a month and obviously they haven't done any update for me at all. :(

well, guess i can't do anything anymore as it's too late. my inerviw is the 20th, guess i have to go without any documents of me and my husband name, not even a co-bank accout :(

do you guys think USCIS will accuse us as a fraud marriage as i don't have anything else to show them except photos and marriage license?

Another issue related with tax, so many people have got wrong idea. I want to clarify it here :

IF YOU OWE MONEY TO IRS THEN YOU HAVE TO FILE BY APRIL 15th BUT

IF YOU GET REFUND FROM IRS YOU DON'T HAVE TO FILE APRIL 15th, IN FACT YOU HAVE 3 YEARS TO FILE !.....

My wife is still in Colombia and we filed jointly. I can not get her a SSN as she is not in the USA. So I sent in a Certified passport copy with an apostile, a certified birth certificate with apostile, and a certified copy of her Colombian Id card. They sent my back a letter saying they needed the original passport. Duh ! My wife will be coming to USA in a month or two, and they want the original Passport now ? The IRS can kiss my A$$. Isn't America wonderful.

ELKFARMER :

What you should have done is to file "Married Filing Jointly" & explain on a piece of paper that

your wife does not have any SS# yet. By doing this, you can not get some credits like EIC etc...

You didn't have to send all those ID & passport copies to IRS,

all they want is a SS# which matches with the name.

I am now experiencing a similiar situation. We went to the SSN office 2 days after my fiancee arrival in USA to apply for SSN. The employees servicing us was rude said my fiancee's information was not in the "system" yet. She said to call in 2 weeks if we do not hear anything. I tried calling to check on the status after 2 weeks and their phone system is useless. If you are lucky to get the phone system to answer after 30 tries it then puts you on hold. So after 6 weeks we went back and our luck we got called to the same lady as the first time. She said she remembered us and had received something from USCIS or DHS but she "had not had time to act on it" She would not check the "system" again and told us she would mail in to the DHS a xerox copy of my fiancee's passport, visa and I-94. Well those are all things DHS has already. I am going back to the SSN office and demanding to speak with the supervisor as soon as I can. Now we ahve to file our AOS without a SSN due to a lazy untrained unconcerned federal employee. I do not believe the DHS and USCIS would take over 7 weeks to enter someones information. My fiancee met several other girls at the embassy interview or ST Lukes Medical Clinic in the Philippines and they had no problem getting their SSN in a very reasonable time.
