Well, my replacement social security card arrived in the mail yesterday, so I can now press on and get my Illinois drivers licence. I shall be booking myself in for the test today.

So question for you guys - what did you take with you to the Social Security Office?

We went a while back and were told she couldn't get one (regardless of the print out we had). Now my wife's trying to get it in her married name, that shouldn't be an issue should it be? They said they couldn't do that as there would be nothing on file that has her married name...but we had a certified copy of the marriage certificate...

any thoughts, or recommendations?

The name "on file" in the SAVE database is the one you entered the country using. It's the name written on the I-94. Skip the name change until you get a green card. It confuses the issue and some will say the SS card can only be issued as it is shown in the database and on I-94. Did you ask to see a supervisor and actually get them to look at that list showing K1 is eligible. I would try that or go to a different office.

I went through a nightmare trying to get a SSN tried severla different offices and they all said no, this was the information i received from 'I Quit' which worked and i had a call the next day advising my SS card was on its way:

Say that you have K-1 status and want to know about your application. If you have the reference number 09XXXXXXXX from the application include it along with the SSA office where this happened and your phone number.

The system doesn't allow people to send Social Security numbers and it might think the reference number is an SSN, so you might have to play around with the number to fool the system, i.e. put spaces between all the numbers or spell out the numbers.

As Nich said you have to apply in the name on the I-94, so get the card in maiden name for the time being this can be changed at a later date.

WOW!!! How easy was that!!??? I am now the proud owner of a 5 year Illinois drivers license!!

I simply rocked up at the local DMV office, presented the required I.D. (SSN card, passport, and proof of Illinois address, for which I used a bank statement) took the vision test, the written test, and the driving test, right there and then, passed them, had my photo taken, and was presented with a shiny new 5 year Illinois drivers license!!! Right there on the spot!!Absolute walk in the park!! No questions about I-94/K-1/AOS/EAD, nothing!! They just wanted to see that the passport was valid.

Just a quick update, and a quick question.

I'm only waiting for my our co-sponsor to dot the 'I's and cross the 'T's on his I-864, and then I'm ready to file. Thing is, he's a bit of procrastinator, and if he faffs around much longer, I was just gonna send 'er indoors' completed I-864, and wait for the RFE re required income.

Am I right in thinking that even though I'll definitely get RFE'd on the poverty limit thing, and as such my GC will be delayed for a bit, this won't affect the time in which I receive my EAD? That's processed somewhere else, right?

If you get an RFE at the NBC stage (which yours would be) it holds up the EAD and the AP. The only time it doesn't hold them up is once a case has been transferred to CSC and CSC send out an RFE.
