This is a subject close to my heart, I was diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis about ten years ago. When I first got sick I was put on so many drugs, heavy narcotics, I was out of my mind. The last straw for me was liquid morphine, I was sick of it, so I threw all the narcotics away and got some Marijuana and never looked back. Marijuana is not additive, no one has ever died of an overdose, unlike prescriptions or even alcohol. So if you are interested take a look at what we are trying to do at NORM. You want to stop the senseless violence, like we had when alcohol was outlawed. Remember the violence in the days when they were smuggling alcohol? Lets stop this madness.

Tell President Obama That Legalizing Marijuana Is No Laughing Matter

Dear Friend:

Speaking at an online Town Hall meeting yesterday, President Barack Obama pledged "to open up the White House to the American people."

Well, to some of the American people that is.

As for those tens of millions of you who believe that cannabis should be legally regulated like alcohol -- and the tens of thousands of you who voted to make this subject the most popular question in yesterday's online Presidential Town Hall -- well, your voice doesn't really matter.

Asked this morning whether he "would ... support the bill currently going through the California legislation to legalize and tax marijuana, boosting the economy and reducing drug cartel related violence," the President responded with derision.

"There was one question that was voted on that ranked fairly high and that was whether legalizing marijuana would improve the economy and job creation, and I don't know what this says about the online audience," he laughed.

"The answer is no, I don't think that [is] a good strategy." (You can watch a video clip of President Obama's response here.)

Obama's cynical rebuff was short-sighted and disrespectful to a large percentage of his supporters. After all, was it not this very same "online audience" that donated heavily to Obama's Presidential campaign and ultimately carried him to the White House?

The American public is ready and willing to engage in a serious and objective political debate regarding the merits of legalizing the use of cannabis by adults. The time for joking is over.

It is obvious that many of you feel similarly. Yesterday, NORML's website received more blog comments than in any other single day in our history!

Please take a moment to tell the President that marijuana law reform is no laughing matter, and that the millions of Americans who support this issue deserve to be treated respectfully. For your convenience, a pre-written letter will be e-mailed to President Obama when you enter you go here:

You can also call the President during east coast business hours at:

* Comments: 202-456-1111

* Switchboard: 202-456-1414

If you call, please be respectful and polite. Please leave your name and where you are from. Tell the President:

"I'm one of the tens of millions of Americans who believe that cannabis should be legally regulated like alcohol.

The American public is ready and willing to engage in a serious and objective political debate regarding the merits of legalizing the use of cannabis by adults. The time for joking is over.

Please consider apologizing for your dismissive tone, and please consider treating those of us who believe that there are viable alternatives to marijuana prohibition with the respect we deserve."

Help us send the White House a message it can't ignore.

Thank you for assisting NORML's federal law reform efforts.

Sincerely,

The NORML Team

I agree with what you have posted here and have sent the email off.

Thank you for informing me about how he responded. It is interesting that he would so casually dismiss an online audience, when I get emails from his team every day praising how the election was won because of the online support!

The question he responded to was about whether legalizing pot would encourage job growth... not whether legalizing it would be a good idea in general.

We talked about this yesterday in class. Of course many of the college students are for it. One girl said legalize all drugs and our prof said "The the question becomes could we could survive the next 12 months afterwords?"

Marijuana is not addictive

Marijuana is very addicting. It ruins your lungs, makes you lazy, and hungry. It gives you cottonmouth, makes you stupid, paranoid, and causes your heart to beat really fast. Makes your eyes bloodshot, costs too much money, makes you smell. When you comedown from it, you become drowsy, exhausted, and wiped out. It is a gateway drug to everything else. It is illegal and should stay that way because the world would be a better place without it.

Yeah, but think about the economic stimulus created in the U.S by the increased demand for Doritos, Twinkies, and Haggen Daz.

Marijuana is NOT PHYSICALLY addictive...but it can be mentally addictive. There is a difference.

To be physically addicted to something means that when you stop doing it you go through withdrawal symptoms. If you smoke Marijuana everyday for 10 years and then stop, you will not experience any withdrawal symptoms. Sure, you might really really want to smoke, but that's totally mental, not physical.

Alcohol on the otherhand, while completely legal, does cause withdrawal symptoms and IS physically addictive.

And I will just choose not to comment on the other things you have posted.

If you were stricken with cancer, God forbid, and the chemo was making you so nauseous that you were scary skinny and the oncologist told you to get a joint and take a few puffs before each meal would ya do it?

Yes, in a heartbeat. I used to smoke everyday multiple times a day for years. From 14-21 I probably smoked 10,000 blunts, 10,000 joints, 5,000 bowls, and 15,000 cigarettes.

The thing that ticks me off about this debate is that people demand all narcotics to be legalized as if they will then be able to go to the local convenience store to legally buy dope and if the effects of chronic narcotic use eventually comes to roost then ol' Uncle Sugar (the taxpay) will cheerfully pony up with a cornucopia of treatments to rescue them from their self induced destruction.

What a pie in the sky delusion. I see nothing benefitial for society at large in doing that. It is just a doper's wet dream.

This medical marijuana myth is another boondogle too. Yes, I'm sure a very, very limited amount of people might actually legitimately benefit from it. Unfortunately for many it is just a ruse to do weed on a flimsy premise. Gee doc...I got a headache...can you write me a script for a pound of weed? I'm dying here! Yeah...right.

At best I could stomach decriminalizing some narcotics such as marijuana in small quantities for possession and personal cultivation. This is a far cry from total legalization. Focus on the traffickers and profiteers instead.
