We recently recieved a letter saying that my wifes green card was "ordered production" and she is scheduled to fly home for a visit on April 1 which we know is cutting it short.

The question is has anyone else have any experence with how long it really takes and we are thinking that worse case the card will arrive b4 she is scheduled to return and I can just mail it to her before the return trip. Does anyone see anything wrong with this plan? Is there something I'm missing?

We will appreciste any input.

Nothing wrong with the plan. Had a family member do that before---for family emergencies had to leave the country while waiting for green card; then she just got the card fedexed to her and not a problem; if you really want to be paranoid like I'm, just make sure you scan the green card front and back, and email that along in case the card gets lost; then your wife would go to her embassy and request some travel document; however, makes it easier if you got copies of the green card to hand out to the embassy people. Why take a risk of it getting lost in the mail? Get her to make a infopass appointment at your local USCIS office, take proof of up-coming flight and ask for I-551 stamp in her passport.

The I-551 stamp is a temp Greencard and it is all she will need to get back in the US after her trip is finished.

My Late wife was approved for her Greencard in Nov 2005 and because her Greencard got lost in the US mail we had to file for a new one at $$$ cost and had to have new biometrics done and then it took until Aug 2006 to get the replacement.

I would not like for anyones spouse to be stuck outside the US waiting for a replacement greencard.

As Kez/Wolf says, make an infopass appointment at your local office, bring along proof of travel and request the I-551 stamp in her passport. Don't leave the US with the expectation that the green card can be mailed to her - anything could happen to it that way. She needs to have the green card in her possession or the I-551 stamp in her passport when she leaves the country.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

if you check in online, then you wont have this problem as you wont need to speak to a person at all :)

also, as for the timeline... I have seen it in many applications lately that it takes about a week after the welcome letter, so I think you'll be safe in the end :)
