Hello All!

I'm just wondering if anybody could advise us how to change my name in my SS number..

I had my SSN taken care of last week. I applied using my married name and affixed it on my SS5 form.

Presented my I-94, passport, a copy of the page from the SSA (saying that K1 visas are allowed to get SSN and work without DHS authorization)

and our marriage certificate.

The lady there told us to come back today (Monday) to get my SS number.

Now, when I got my SS number, I was just wondering why it still has my single name.

Then, the lady there didn't even mention when should I need my picture taken for my SS card.

All she said is that I should come back with my adjustment of status approved and marital status changed.

For those, who already got their SSN, when did you had your photo taken after filing the SS5 form?

How many days will it take for the SS card be received?

Hope you could advise..

You may not be able to get a new SSN with your married name until after you receive your EAD or GC. I had mine in my single name until I had such documentation. Unless this is something new, you don't need a photo for your SSN. I don't know when your I-94 expires, but if it has only 15 days or less time then you'll have to wait for your EAD or GC to get your married name on it.

You can't work right now anyway, so you won't need your card. Also note you'll have the same SS number, that won't change, just the name on it.

We were told for K1s that they must find your name in the database of arrivals and the name must be taken from that database. The name is as you wrote it on your I-94. My husband put his first middle and last name on the SS application, but his card could only be issued in first and last name because that's what was on his I-94.

For your SSN, you have to wait for your EAD before you could change your name. I have all of my papers in my maiden name: medical insurance, bank account, SSN. Would change everything once i got my EAD or GC (whichever is appropriate). No photo for SSN.

when i went to SS last week of february and apply for SSN i presented my i-94 w/ my marriage certificate. then 1 week after my SS card arrived in my married name already. so i guess it depends on them (SS officer) who assist you if they will allow u to use your married name even if you dont have your EAD yet.

We followed the instructions on VJ Forum and waited 2 weeks after entering the US to go to the SS office.

Angela got her social security card and number in the mail about a week later (in her maiden name).

Then we got married a week later and went back to the SS office to ask them to change her name to the new married name.

She received the new card with the married name a week later.

Now, I did not know how important it is, but Angela got the EAD stamp at JFK when she entered the country.

You don't need to change your name. There would be no effect either on AOS or on SS.

Lots of men and women keep their own name after marriage.

Your SS card can be issued in your own name, and all your AOS paperwork can be filled in with your own name

What if i just keep my single name after i got married? So i don't have to change my name in all my documents or i really need to use my husband's name??

That is your choice. You can use your maiden name, married name, or a combination of both. As long as you change your documents to match the name you plan on using, it's your choice.
