Granted Bush and the Republicans spent money like Reagan's drunken sailors the past 8 years, but Clinton only balance the budget because Newt and the Republicans forced him to do it. If Reagan had control of Congress like Bush, there probably would be a lot less government right now.

 Wait until 2011. It will be deja vu all over again, unless the Democrats pull off a miracle!

Thats a great clip and he makes some good points about the Bush era spending.

One little note if I may...

People are giving clinton a little too much credit for his budgets.

1.The Cold War had just Ended and the Huge drop in military spending gave him a huge boost.

2. The Republicans took control of the House and Senate by land slides, with many NEW REFORM oriented Conservatives which Limited what Clinton could get through in his Budgets... anyone recall the "Govt' shutdown" period?

3. We were in a good economic Cycle with Brought lots of tax dollars into WASHIngton DC.

+ Now if the people who came to washington with one goal ; (to reign in Washington) ended up a decade later spending like crazy... what will happen with the group in DC now who came to D.C. on the promise to SPEND MONEY AND RAISE TAXES.

One thing about the recent Republican control though that is quite different from the current Democrat control. The Republican "control" of congress did not have the sweeping control Democrats have now. Right now, Democrats hardly need Republicans' votes at all, so they don't have to do much compromising. This was not the case with the Republicans. They had at most, what a one vote advantage in the Senate? We've recently seen how powerful a minority can be in stopping government in States like California and even to a small extent in the U.S. Government. So, it is obvious that in order to pass legislation during the past 8 years, a lot of appeasing Democrats would have had to take place or basically government would just come to a halt (not that that would have necassarily been bad). Most of the spending bills passed under Bush had a fair percentage of Democrat votes in there and it is a good bet they had a fair amount of Democrat language, so while the Republicans do in fact hold the ultimate lions share of the blame for the deficits created in the past 8 years, they cannot be held entirely responsible. Now..with this new round of deficits- that's a hole different story!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
