We started the registry at Babies R Us and we are going to do another one at target. What are the must haves or things people don't think of?

Here is a list of supplies to have onhand before the baby is born from a magazine that was in the goody bag the OB gave me (the moms can verify and add!):

LAYETTE

1 "take-me-home" outfit

(I'll add an outfit for the hospital photo if you have one taken)

8 bodysuits

3 shirt-and-pant sets

4 coveralls (one-piece footed outfits)

1 sweater

6 pairs of socks

2 large hooded towels

8 sleep gowns with elastic bottom

2 sleep sacks (serve as safe blankets)

lots of burp cloths

4 receiving blankets

DEPENDING ON THE CLIMATE

AND WHEN YOUR BABY IS BORN:

coat, knit hat, snowsuit (not here, and not for August  Well, maybe the hat. )

brimmed sun hat

THE NURSERY

crib

firm mattress

sheet protector or mattress pad

3 to 4 fitted crib sheets (ideally with elastic all around, not just at the corners)

monitor (unless you live in a small home)

dresser with changing area

lamp

glider (better than a rocking chair)

diaper pail or disposal unit

small hamper (or laundry bag)

toy storage

GEAR

infant car seat

infant tub

diaper bag

stroller that allows your newborn to fully recline

bouncy seat

OPTIONAL, BUT NICE TO HAVE:

swing

sling or front carrier

play yard (they called them playpens when I was little -- guess kids aren't animals anymore!)

BABY CARE

diapers (just a pack or two of the newborn size)

baby wipes (unscented for newborns)

(I'll add cornstarch baby powder -- don't they recommend this anymore?)

diaper rash cream with zinc oxide

digital rectal thermometer

infant acetaminophen

nasal aspirator

disposable washcloths, or 3 to 4 regular ones

all-in-one baby shampoo/wash

baby lotion

petroleum jelly

4 to 5 pacifiers

sterile cotton balls

baby nail clippers or scissors

swaddling blanket

mild laundry detergent

baby-formula sunscreen

CHILDPROOFING

smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

BOTTLE-FEEDING

formula

4 to 6 small bottles

4 to 6 large bottles

disposable bottle liners (if you're using them)

bottle drying rack

dishwasher basket for nipples and rings

bottle brush (with nipple brush attached)

BREASTFEEDING

breast pump

nursing pads

nursing pillow

can of formula in case of emergency

freezer storage containers

nipple cream

2 to 3 bottles

1 nursing bra (you might get bigger after delivery)

And here is the advice I got from a former coworker when I wrote to him about our pregnancy:

"Never buy a baby one piece ( i think they call them "jumpers" ) that has the snaps going up just one leg. I about broke Andrew's leg trying to get him back into one of those things. Make sure the snaps go up both legs and meet in the middle. It makes changing diapers much easier."

I'm the USC.

Yeah, its my first baby and in the middle of the K1 process. Since I wont be able to get my xray done until after birth I'll obviously will be giving birth here in Australia. I actually dont mind at all as my health insurance covers everything and I'd rather avoid the hassle of giving birth in the US...Im just hoping for a smooth pregnancy.. :)

Congrats!!! I think if you are pregnant they may waive the vaccinations and xray for the medical, and you do them in the US for the AOS. You may want to check with other pregnant K1ers :)

Caro

Hi y'all... Was lurking in the old thread before, and just thought that I'd say hello here :) your babies are adorable!

Anyhoo, tomorrow is my medical, part 2... Part 2 coz i am told to wait for my period to come or else do urine test (the doc even gave me a take home bottle for tomorrow morning to bring in!) to see if im preggers or not... Me and hubby hoping that Im not yet, as we're not sure how this will affect our plan of me going there soon... And my interview is on Tuesday to boot. I know that they have these protective gear to cover the tummy area during Xray, not sure how i feel about that tho... And I dunno if they will allow me to get the visa without completing my vaccinations... I'm excited as this (if it is to be) is our first baby, but we've been married 9 months and we're almost there.. After all these months of waiting, I dont want to have to go through pregnancy away from my hubby... :crying: Do you think they can waive the vaccines for CR1s cases too?

With the vaccines you might be lucky I think they don't waive the xray though. I've seen another discussion in another board where a pregnant lady complained that they would do the chest xray even if you are pregnant.

I guess I would have the baby in my home country and then see what I could do to get both to the US.

Holy cow...I STILL don't have all the 'have to's'. In my opinion a sling, swing, bouncer, bottles etc. are unnecessary in the beginning. that is all stuff you can get 6 months into it or after you see how baby likes it.

bottles, i'm a working mom, i need bottles to put the pumped milk.

sling, charles travels and if i need to go grocery shopping and have no day care i won't carry a stroller, a sling is way easier.

swing, that's the only place i can put the baby if i'm in the kitchen for example, or i want the baby to calm down.

bouncer - i don't think it's necessary if i have the swing

and how r u gonna see if they like it if they don't have it?

Kavi turns one on Sunday. :o:dance: We are having a birthday party for him.

I got emails every week from babyweekly for updates about what the baby might be doing at a stage, and before that it was pregnancyweekly...and now I got the last babyweekly email today. :( He's not really a baby anymore, huh? He's becoming a toddler!! Wowzers.

YOUR KAVI??? The little boy on those pictures turns one already? Wasn't he just born yesterday???

I'm planning Adam's 2nd birthday party. We are going to have a wildlife-animal theme. Still have to send out invitations and stuff. We just gonna put up a bouncy castle (my MIL bought one) and have the kids play in the sand. Hopefully the weather is nice so we can be outside all afternoon.

Ok ok ok...it's Humana Military. My DH is medically retired so we still have some of the military privileges. I guess I shouldn't have posted that since most insurances do cost a heck of a lot more.

This may have been covered already, but when did you all start buying supplies, clothes, etc.? I'm afraid the little things will nickel and dime us to death if we wait until the last minute. I'm thinking if we buy a little with each paycheck, it won't hit as hard all at once, especially if we have unexpected medical bills. I know my sister plans to knit some things, as do I, but those will be extras, not on the basic list. My husband wants the hospital photo to be in a traditional outfit -- I guess that means he'll have to agree to learn the sex ahead of time so he'll know what to ask his mom to buy.

Also, has anyone started saving for college?? Seems premature, but I've been getting that advice, to get $50 a month going into a college savings account. And there's UPromise, which is supposed to be an effortless way of saving for college, although it looks like you save the most with name-brand stuff, and we usually buy store brand (except for ketchup!). I may still try it though. You can start while you're pregnant, and your family can sign up too.

Sorry if both of these have been discussed already -- too lazy to read the archives today.

Hope everyone's having a good day. I am SO glad it's Friday and SO glad the move will be finished tomorrow! My poor knees!
