Pentagon sets its sights on social networking websites

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg1902...=mg19025556.200

"I AM continually shocked and appalled at the details people voluntarily post online about themselves." So says Jon Callas, chief security officer at PGP, a Silicon Valley-based maker of encryption software. He is far from alone in noticing that fast-growing social networking websites such as MySpace and Friendster are a snoop's dream."

Yea, especially kids and its all over the TV how pedophiles know this too.

Yet those same programmes make pedophilia into a full-blown national epidemic. Interesting considering how sexual crimes are statistically among the least numerous that are committed nationally.

Yet watching the TV you'd be scared to let your kids out of the house for fear that a greasy horde of perverts are waiting to pounce on them before they get 10 feet from the door. Media scaremongering.

Well, maybe it is how many men if they wouldnt get caught would do this? This shows proves the point any type of man could possible do it.

No its scaremongering. Precisely the same reason why women feel afraid to walk the streets in most major cities, despite the fact that young men are many times more likely to be the target of a mugging or violent street robbery.

Well they glean as much personal info as they like from my Myspace....I am not sure what they would want to do with it once they got it tho'

Big Brother is everywhere not just on Myspace

If you're stupid enough to post personal information in the public domain (myspace, friendster, anywhere on the WWW), then you've already exposed yourself more than you should. If big brother watches, I can't blame him.

People who really have a problem with big brother should not go out of their way to expose intimate details of their life in public.

I just don't understand the whole issue of ppl 'finding' personal info on us...firstly why would they want to and secondly I am sure the vast majority of us aren't the least bit interesting to for others to want to glean the info....as long as I don't have my bank details etc posted what can anyone really do to me that an opportunist thief passing my home could do?........

the average Briton is filmed 300 times a day on average, just going about their own business in a day...lifestyle choices are gleaned by how we shop, where we shop, our phone numbers and addresses are available in free telephone books. Last week we gave notice of marriage which means our names, address, occupations are posted up in a public office for everyone to view.......do I worry about Myspace?? not at all.......

I agree that big brother can't be held accountable for "snooping" when it's in a public forum. (That's like getting mad at the cop that pulls you over and smells marijuana.... DUH!!!)

What I worry about though is posting things on here saying that I disagree with the current actions of this administration, then having a picture of me shooting my rifle on MySpace. I have a picture on there to let folks know that I'm interested in shooting and I like my 2nd Amendment rights. However, big brother can look at that as "Hmmm. He likes the 2nd Amendment and doesn't like the current actions of the government.... put him on the list." That's when it goes from just a casual browse of my MySpace profile to a check with my employer, maybe someone seeing who I spend my free time with, going through my garbage and personal records, maybe even checking my home when I'm not there. And that starts to violate another right that I like too. The 4th Amendment.

is one of the things why I wrote my reps to vote against the PA. it blows, violates what this country stood for.. and they just turned it into really old toilette paper.
