Its not even safe to walk in my neighbourhood, I tried taking my dog for a walk a couple of times, nearly got hit, so I can't even imagine riding my bike anywhere around town. Heck, I know people around here who live Accross the Street from a convenience store and yet they'll Still DRIVE there!

Here in Morganton, we have to drive anywhere to go for a walk or bike ride. We have the riverside Greenway walking/biking trail. Waking or biking anywhere else in town is not at all safe. Anyone who does walk anywhere other than on the Greenway is considered a bit crazy, or everyone thinks they must have lost their driver's license to DUI er summat

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Maybe they were angry because you and your daughter were somehow keeping them from their soap operas.

I can empathize with you, when I used to ride my bicycle to school, I periodically would get run off the road by irate drivers.

By the by, where I live, the neighboring university cycling team often rides on the roads. Not a problem at all except for the urge when there are three or more of them in a line to shout out "Duck, Duck, Goose" and smack me some cyclist a##.

Carrie, you are too funny! Yes, you would walk toward traffic, but I was trying to figure out what you would do on a bike when you came to roadworks and a flagger. I couldn't quite figure that one out. lol

What I found strange was how all the people that seemed to get disgruntled were seriously obese women. It's a shame that people drive absolutely everywhere - we live in the country and there is so much to enjoy when you are cycling. I couldn't help but notice just how fragrant the honeysuckle was along the side of the road.

Still, I expect the fragrance of Fox's Pizza was drawing these lady drivers into town!

Our journey started in 2001 and it's still not over. It's been a rollercoaster ride all the way! Let me off - I wanna be sick!

The nearest gym to my house is at least an hour's drive. We live in a rural part of WV. The town has a population of only 250 people - although it is growing.

I used to work-out every day when I lived in England and since moving here have gained a few pounds....................okay 15. I thought it was time to do something, so I asked for a bicycle, for my birthday, which was yesterday. It is only 2 miles from my house to the local SevenEleven and Dollar Store, so I thought that my daughter and I could ride there and back - just to get us started. It's been a while.

We get about 1.5 miles down the road and some "lard #######" woman in her car slows down and shouts at my daughter "Get out of the fuc*ing road!!". Well, that's nice! My daughter was riding perfectly safely, she was tucked into the side of the road, and not causing a problem to anyone.

It was all the women that were honking their horns and driving past way too close, when there was plenty of room and it was a dead-straight country road. The guys in their trucks were very polite and slowed down, pulled to the other side of the road, as they passed.

What is the matter with these women? I really felt like making up a sign to put on my back saying something like "Get your fat ####### out of your car and onto a bike of your own!"

riding 'in-line' not 'side-by-side'. right?

2tonBertha: "Hey BigMilldread you smell that?"

BigMilldread: "Yeah what is that?"

2tonBertha: "Hmm, I think it's Fox's Pizza 10 miles in town, a large with pepperoni?"

BigMilldread "No, sausage, I'll get the car..."

Absolutely!

In Colorado they would ride 4 abreast on country roads. That pissed me off.

All we get are small dogs chasing us and barking, hubby almost mushed a chihuahua once. I love how the owners give us dirty looks for disturbing their dogs, the same dogs that bark all day & night.

Girona, just keep riding, maybe you'll motivate the tubbies to get out there too!

Well, there's your problem. You're in West Virginia! ;)

I've ridden my bike, off and on, for the past 15 years to work, most recently to save money on gas. Every day I ride I save $3.50 or so, and it's great exercise. Fortunately for half of my commute I'm on a bike trail, and the roads I do have to ride are wide or have bike lanes.

Um, G, "West Virginia" is not "the USA". :)

Portland Oregon is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country. Damn pushbikers are taking over the roads here. ;)

We bike everywhere until there is a foot of snow on the ground. Mostly we don't get any trouble - the worse being nervous drivers who won't pass us. I HATE cyclists who do not obey simple traffic rules - they need to get a ticket  The real menace on the roads are people who drive while talking on their cellphones....don't get me started on that one
